Teflon Tape!!
« on: October 11, 2016, 04:39:55 AM »
Hello members!

My question is simple. Was Teflon tape used at the factory? Is it acceptable to use in a restoration that will ultimately be judged?

You did not explain where or how or what you would use this tape on, but my answer is simple as well:) No, & no,& never use t. tape for anything on a car.

Every manual I've read says no teflon tape on fuel lines. The crumbs wind up in the jets or filters.

I don't think you would ever need it on a fuel fitting since those are all flare type ends.  It would only be applicable to tapered pipe type fittings.

True, and plugs are used in oil galleys, Man. trans, rear axles. I may use plumber's pipe dope, but I still would never use T. tape on any car part. Take it for what it's worth, I am only a lowly Farmer/Mechanic with 40 years of A.S.E. certified Master Mechanic credentials.

Oh I agree 100%!  Pipe dope works so much nicer on pipe fittings.

I haven't used the tape in years.

I was remiss by not being specific as to where I would use the tape. I was speaking of the engine's temperature sender, transmission vacuum source, heater fitting (all on the iron intake) and the other heater fitting on the water pump. All are of the tapered thread variety. All of your replies are unanimous, so I'm off to the hardware store to purchase some plumber's pipe dope.

Thank's guys!

I use a light coat of pipe dope and clean any excess after tightening.

I've used Permatex #2 for centuries on pipe threads including any threads that may enter coolant areas.

Teflon Tape was never used. As recommended a light coating of pipe dope or permatex works well and clean off the excess.
