late 69 cowl air cleaner details
« on: August 20, 2016, 11:05:05 PM »
Looking for info on a late 09c cowl induction air cleaner. The late 69 cowl air cleaner is ribbed on the bottom and there are a few details in the snorkle and breather tube that is different from a later service replacement. Does anyone have any pics of the tube and the snorkle of a true late original 69 air cleaner? The 69 orange survivor z that Chick knows has the air cleaner I need pics of.Anyone?thanks alot John

My late 09C original cowl induction air cleaner has a FLAT bottom... not a ribbed bottom.  I believe the OTC parts had the ribbed bottoms, as for the '70 Chevelles.   I suppose it's possible that for a period in late '69, they may have had a 'mix' of the (flat bottom) '69 and (ribbed) '70 parts in the assembly line mix...?

It's not suppose it's possible, they did Gary!  Steve Shauger could confirm as he and the vintage team reviewed that car.
John, between getting our 68Z completed, and other commitments I did forget and not place your request high but Skip and I are getting together this week for Corvette Carlisle and hopefully I can check that out and post a couple pictures.

Another question answered.

'80s service replacement ZL2 air cleaners had a vent tube with 2 45º bends to clear the rear pump lever on a DP carb. This one retains the 90º bend which won't clear.

Resurrecting this old thread as I'm trying to confirm what I have.  My ZL2 air cleaner is likely not the original to the car based on the car history.  PO told me that after he bought the car in the 1980 time frame he went to the GM dealer and bought a bunch of stuff including X11 trim and a dash pad.  I'm guessing he bought this air cleaner setup at the same time.  He supplied me an engine photo from 1981 that shows this air cleaner.  Seal ring still has GM sticker on it, base has no markings.  Is my air cleaner consistent with a 1970's/80's service replacement?

Definitely GMPD service replacement. Sold dozens of them in my parts days. For some time they were serviced with a chromed lid.

The 2nd design base with the stamped rib base was used in late '69 production but not with the 2 x 45º vent tube. Production parts did not have part labels; if the flange has a flat spot on the rh side it is really for a Chevelle with a/c.

Thanks for the confirmation....yes the flange has a flat edge.  FWIW, the lid is black.
