Body shim thickness
« on: July 27, 2016, 02:37:34 PM »
In the '67 AIM I see only one shim referenced (P/N 3711834) for fender shims and they measure to approximately 1/8" thickness. All of the shims I have are original (square outside edges with some stamped 'P') but one in a stack I have has a square outside edge (no stamp) and is only 1/16" thick. I suspect I may have added that back in the 80's when I first restored the convertible but I can't say for sure.
Has anyone seen an original Camaro shim thickness other than 1/8"?

Thanks,
Mike

I have personally removed 1/16 however I do not know if any have been from 67's.
The majority of my experience lies with 69's then 68's far behind is 67.

Mike, I posted a few years back about 5 or 6 different shims that were in the shop in our parts bin.  I just grabbed some.  Let me see if I can find the pic.  I don't remember what year they were.  We parted out dozens of cars (mid 50s to early 70s cars) in the time period of the mid 70s to early 90s.

OK, I found the pic.  Can't remember the thickness, but I think there were two sizes.

** Edit to clarify years of cars.

Thanks, Bryon. The square shim with the quarter above it looks like the one though all of the ones I have a slight cut on the inner leg edge. But, you do see how square that is compared to the reproductions which have slightly rounded corners. I wonder if these shapes varied between years and manufactures. Aside from the top middle shim used for front end alignments, I've not seen the others before.

Thanks!
Mike

We probably had more than a gallon bucket full of shims in the parts bin 30-35 years ago. I will try to look again when I can in about 10 days.

I removed 1/16" shims from a '67 I'm doing.

That upper middle shim in Bryon's photo is not an alignment shim, it is too large and the wrong shape. I have removed that style shown and it was used as a body shim.
Shims removed have 90° corners except the inside which have 45° cuts.

Hi Scott,
I thought that middle was an alignment shim, but I'm doing this from memory. The handle is what made me think that.
So the 1/16th may well be original then. It has the sharp 90 degree edges but just no 45 degree cut on the inside legs as the 1/8" shim which is why I though maybe I added it. Then again, I'm sure there were different suppliers back then too which may account for slight variances in shape.

Thanks,
Mike
