What Does this starter belong on?
« on: December 31, 2006, 03:05:47 PM »
I have a 69 Camaro SS 350 that most of my numbers match up. I'm doing a total restore on the car. I have tore the motor all down and found that the starter number's don't match up to my book. The numbers on the starter that I do have are 1107355 8-L-20. The book says it should have 1108338. Can someone let me know what the starter that I have belongs too.

Thanks
Tom

Tom,

That's a 1969 Pontiac starter built on November 20th, 1968.

Tom,

Actually, that "number" belongs to a 69 Pontiac, but because rebuilders commonly change housings, it's found its way to your 69 SS 350. Remember, they could care less about date codes and casting/stamped numbers, so you'll find starters on Chevrolet cars with housings from Caddys, Buicks, Olds, Pontiacs, Trucks, etc... They all fit!

Ed,

What do you know about distributors, I have a 1111488 9A 28  number on one that had been put in the trunk of the car, and the one that was actually on the motor I couldn't find a number. The 1111488 9A 28 distibutor had orange paint on it like it had been on the motor.

Any clue what is belongs on?? And if it belongs to the car or will work, can you lead me to someone that can rebuild it?

Thanks
Tom

Tom,

That's a 1969 Chevrolet, Nova, Acadian, Chevelle, Camaro and Canada Passenger car distributor, all with the 350/300 and manual transmission. That one was built on January 28th, 1969. Depending on the date of your engine, it may be the original to your car.

As for rebuilding it, do you just want it "rebuilt" or do you want it for 'show"? If you just want it "rebuilt", you can do it yourself, or check the phonebook for a local rebuilder. Most allow "walk-in" work.

If you want it restored as "show" quality, there are several guys that can do this, with Jerry MacNeish at CAMARO HIGH PERFORMANCE being one of the best.

According to Jerry, an 1108420 starter is used on a 69 SS350 automatic.

That's what on my original engine.

Just thought that I would throw that in....

8338 is the 68 L48/PG starter, and was also used on the later 69 L48/PG after they switched back from the 8361 used early in 69 that was blamed for hot-starting problems.  Refer to Service Bulletin 69-T-9 if you want detail.  The 8420 typically found its way into the 69 L48/THM350.

Tom, you should start a new thread for your spring question - it'll get "lost" under this thread, which is entitled "starters".
