Totally up to you, but I would keep the sticker off the car.

I'm curious why you feel that way Bryon?   All of our cars are 'old used' cars, regardless of whether unrestored, or restored, etc...  the dealership that sold the cars are an important part of the car's history.. IMO...  :)

I just wouldn't put anything on the paint. Plate frame or something similar, no problem.

But again, totally up to the owner.

OK..  I've got your position now (re the paint)... which is why I always rejected the dealer stickers when I purchased a new vehicle.. :)

Most of the time I see that stuff, including dealer stickers and information,  it's neatly displayed in a glass case or picture frame along with the paperwork for the car that sits along side the car.  Rarely have I ever seen anyone stick a dealer decal on a freshly restored car.

Maybe this has become something that is recently catching on, I don't know, but if I felt I really had to display it that way I would absolutely use a magnet only.  As expensive as paint is, and the amount of work involved, I cringe at the thought of sticking anything on there, lol.

You will never take it back off anyway so why worry about the paint under the sticker ? I would be thrilled if I found a orig. sticker to duplicate one that was on my car back in the day.

Because to be honest, I think they take away from the beauty of the car, and if I got tired of looking at it and decided to peel it off...well....   Putting it on a magnet gives me the option to go back and forth without harm to the paint.  Those magnets are so thin that anyone looking at it don't know any different.  Plus it gives the next owner the option, as I find most people I'm dealing with on these restorations really don't want things stuck to their cars that the assembly line didn't install, lol.

Back then, and even now, I always considered that stuff as free advertisement for the dealer anyway and was never interested in having that stuff on any of my cars.  Displaying it with the car along with all other documentation however all in one place I think is a nice way of doing it, so you can take it all in at once.

On the other hand, yeah I see the attraction and completely understand why some would do it.  Me personally, seeing it on an unrestored car, now that's cool.  Seeing them reapplied on a high end restoration, not so much.

Coming from a true paint man... ;D

LOL, the hours involved in straightening panels, welding, block sanding, priming, blocking some more, painting and then sanding, polishing to perfection, 100's if not 1,000's of hours of work.....Yeah I want to look at the paint, not a sticker

Now in your case Bullitt, with your unrestored car, if it has dealer insignia on the back whether a sticker or emblem,  Now I find that pretty cool and would leave it there.

When I bought my 69 Z it had a High Performance Scuncio Chervolet emblem on the rear. It also came with a key fob and newspaper adds. I thought little of it until a guy at a local show wanted to by it. When his offer got to $1,000.00 plus paint repair I started some research. Some of these emblems and decals are worth keeping on the cars.

Well, after reading all this I'm certainly on the fence as what to do because you brought our both sides of this topic. I will try the magnet idea first and if it doesn't look bad I may leave it that way. God knows how many Disney character magnets I have stuck on my refrigerator from my little granddaughter and I have been looking at them now and some are paper thin. I do my own paint work and the tail panel is blacked out so if for some reason I decided to remove the sticker (if I do stick it on) and it takes paint with it, it's not a problem to respray just the tail panel.
I'm going to use a magnet and stick it on and take pictures and run it past you all for a yey/nay vote.

Thanks!
Mike

Removing an adhesive backed sticker has never posed a problem since I began use of "heat" to soften the glue...  I used a hair dryer to do that... then any remaining adhesive residue can be removed with mineral spirits or alcohol... :)

X2 on that method.  I bought a used race trailer that had decals all over it.  It took a long time to get them off but it worked.
