Hurst Shifter ID / Date Code

I thought I knew how to de-code the date on Hurst shifters, but this one has me thinking... This shifter came on a 73 Z28 M21 that I picked up a few years back. The shifter shaft is coded 0080 which comes back as a 79 Trans Am. With that in mind, what would you say the date code is? I can only come up with March of 71, but it doesn't seem right. Normally that would be 31 wouldn't it? This could definitely be a Frankenstein shifter, but I don't know. Here's a couple shots:

Of course in that thread, I believe we identified that stamping as being a Hurst SERIAL NUMBER (at least for 68-70 shifters for Camaro and Firebird) that had a 'date' (or mo/yr) encoded into it.  Given that it's a serial number, not a date code, then it's possible (or even likely) that over time that Hurst may have changed their serial ID codes/process?  It was noted that the primary reason for that serial number approach was so they could easily identify units still in 'factory warranty' (probably related to GM's requirement on Hurst).  The coding that we believe we identified for '68-70 would only be uniquely valid for up to 10 yrs...

Sure did Gary. Thanks. I'm sure it's possible that it's not a date code, but the zero is the only thing that throws it off. I came across this thread this morning. It looks like in ~71 the might have changed to always using 3 digits versus 2 or 3 depending on the date. ie. "031" for March 71.

Here's what I've confirmed so far for what I have:
Trans is out of a 73 Z28.



Shifter Body matches a 71-74 Camaro with a Muncie shifter. Same angle for the shifter handle receiver.

Shifter Rods are out of a 71-74 Camaro w/ Muncie 4 speed. Seems likely that they're original to the transmission.

Lever "5615" 1-2 and 3-4

Lever "5616" Reverse

Rod "5617" 1-2 (39755617)

Rod "5619" 3-4 (39755619)

Rod "5621" Reverse (39755621)




Shifter Bracket 71-74 Camaro Muncie 3989410



Shifter Handle is 0080  for a 79 Trans Am

After finding a little more info, it seems like I might have to conclude this is a 71 shifter assembly (except for the handle) installed on a 73 M21.
