67 Turbo 400 ID TAG and Detailing
« on: January 05, 2016, 08:57:50 PM »
Greetings Everyone!

Does anyone have a picture of a Turbo 400 CC transmission tag? If not, does anyone have a picture (or link) of a 67 T400 tag from the higher horsepower usage CX trans?  My research so far suggests the '67 tag was dark green. If nothing else, a color representation of the dark green color used would be useful if nothing else is available. My hope is to assemble enough elements to make a decal to place over what remains of my ID tag.  Also, does anyone know what color the case stamps were? Were they also dark green or another color? Any help in this project would be greatly appreciated!

Is your tag stamped?

The link above has some good pics.

Here are a couple of pictures from my '68 L35/TH400 transmission tag.

The first picture is what it looked like before I restored it and the second picture is after restoration. The flash from the camera makes the color in the restored tag look more blue than it really is. It is in fact, very close to the original teal color.

If you venture down the path of having the tag restored, the closest Pantone match that I could find was 3262C.

Good Luck!

Mike,

I did it myself. I recreated the artwork and then had a cliché made from it. The cliché is then used in a special pad printing process. The cliché is essentially a negative of the artwork which allows the ink to flow through it. Sort of like a stencil but with a much higher degree of accuracy that allows for small letter (and number) printing.

WOW!! Bob, you're tag looks FANTASTIC!! My idea was similar to yours - but you actually knew the process to use (which I didn't). Who would I contact to have this process done? A custom decal shop?

Mike, you stated your '67 tag is yellow and yet '68 CC tags are yellow. Can someone explain this?

I'm not sure about the color of the '67 tag. The '68 CC tag is for sure, teal in color.

My initial plan was to have a stencil made and the spray paint the tag using the stencil. I tried contacting several decal companies but none had the capabilities to create a stencil that could get down to the resolution required for the small printing. I doubt you'll find a custom decal shop that has the required equipment. You may want to contact these people (http://www.inkcups.com/) to perhaps see if they could recommend someone who has their equipment. I was fortunate in that I have a friend who works for a company that has one of these machines. I simply needed to provide him with the artwork. I could help you (or any other forum member) with the artwork to get you started if you'd like.

Hopefully, Jerry will find an interest in this thread and let us know. A person on another forum said the '67 CC tags were dark green, but unfortunately, no picture accompanied his post.

Just for accuracy sake..  Was the tag pictured 'restored'??  or reproduced?   It appears to be new aluminum plate to me...??  Given that it's aluminum, a lot of companies have such capability to cut, paint, and stamp just as you specify, but for only one, it would likely be pretty expensive (~$200? unless you have a buddy in one of those shops.. :)..

It was restored. Personally, I would never reproduce a tag like this. Sort of akin to reproducing a trim tag.....just a major no-no in my book. I used very fine sandpaper to remove the scratches being very careful to not remove so much material as to lose the detail of the numbers stamped on the tag.

Yes! You hit the nail right on the head. I did find companies that could make the tag but I ran into a couple of problems. #1. They all wanted a minimum run off at least 15-20 pieces resulting in a $200 to $300 charge. Pretty expensive proposition! #2. Trying to find the correct font to reproduce the stamped info. #3. It goes against my ethics to reproduce such an important piece of the car's identification. There's already enough scammers out there reproducing bogus trim tags. No need to start reproducing fake transmission tags.  :)

No, it never entered my mind that you 'faked' the tag - you did picture the original and the restored one (and I doubt there would be much 'value' to anyone faking a trans tag), but your restored tag looked so very good, the aluminum appeared to be 'new metal'.  Congratulations on a great job.. :)

Thanks Gary! Maybe I found a new business opportunity?  :) Just need to invest a few thousand dollars for the equipment and make LOTS of tags to recoup the investment.
