hugger,
Those are front and rear frames. The dealer's ID trunk plate was not common in the Southern California.
   VT
Interesting, I was told that a few years ago, but couldn't find any verification. Also couldn't determine which was front and rear. In the photo above, I had put the rear plate with the frame that had the recesses at the top, which I thought allowed slightly easier access to change the year stickers.....

Actually you have to swap them. The mounting holes for the 69 rear plate license door are only on the bottom. So "Covina" has to be on the bottom on the rear with mounting holes on either side, unless you are going to drill your license plate door, for the top mount.

Well I reckon I actually guessed right, looking at the plate frame that was on the front in '71:

Have a little time right now, so if you want some dealer ads from your specific dealer, shoot me an e-mail and include your model and year.
If I don’t get model and year I will not send anything
If you message me through PM I will not have your e-mail and also will not send anything

Great pic of a launch with license plate on. I don't see all that many guys with a built car keep that front plate. I am guessing he ran that same license frame front and back, *unless they drilled the back license plate door for the top mounts.  :)

Tim, I saw this thread and thought I would join in.  I remember seeing quite a few Clippinger Chevrolet license frames around LA when I was stationed at Long Beach Naval Station in the early '80s.  Even then I was into classic Chevys (esp. 1st Gen Camaros), and always on the lookout for them (and there were a lot of them in Socal for CHEAP money back then!).  I saw a really interesting link to a '67 Vette while doing an image search for Clippinger and figured you would enjoy it.

BTW, a destroyer I was on in the early '80s pulled into Fremantle and Geraldton during a Westpac deployment in '83.  We really enjoyed the lovely young ladies and cold beer during our port visits, and the friendly people of OZ were fantastic!

This is Clippinger in 1960 and 2012.  Don't know if it is still in business.

That last pic is what is left of Clippinger Chevrolet. I think the bow tie has been removed as well. I have tried to figure out who owns the lot, to try to get the CLippinger sign, Since my white 69 was sold their new. Tim was lucky to find a set of period correct set license frames. I am still looking for a good deal on a set.

Thanks for posting the Bob Wingate story links and picture, he was certainly a big factor in developing that dealer's reputation and high performance status. Also good to hear you enjoyed our own 'left coast' during shore leave!
Austin you can see in the picture I posted of both plate frames, that the rear one has 2 extra mounting holes drilled along the bottom. Suspect that was pretty common; the single plate frame posted just above this on 'WPH698' (also a rear plate) has a hole drilled in the bottom centre, although it looks like the earlier frame style that has 2 spring clips to hold the plate in place.
On the original dealer lot, from research about a year ago the property had been sold for development and I believe the sign was gone. The owner had fallen foul of the City of Covina IIRC as I found some online articles on that.

I see your drilled holes now. The photo bucket banner had darkened in that area so I didn't see it the first time.

Years ago I named my Beagle Nickey. I found a Nickey clicker and then several  years ago went to a big muscle car show at Opryland and met Nickeys daughter she had a set off coasters that came from her dads dealership that I bought. Lost my Beagle a few years back but still have coasters. Still trying to get another Beagle think I would name it Chevy if I get one. Also have seen lighters and Promo cars. But have dealer emblem  and found key chain from Chip Barwick for my Camaro.
