Tachometer Wiring
« on: July 20, 2015, 06:53:13 PM »
Hello all.
Anyone have a wiring diagram of advice on how to wire the 1967 Tachometer to make it work with a MSD ignition?
I was running FAST EFI so the Tach sent to there on the handheld.
Now I have removed the EFI and want to wire the original tach properly and am lost.
I have a yellow and white wire, a brown wire, and the grey wire on the MSD which is the sending unit. But I am not sure how they relate, or what to send or wire up to the gauge or cluster.

Thanks

The grey  wire off of the MSD is the tach sending wire.
But what does it connect to and where do the other wires in the wiring harness connect?

Hello guys.
I am likely confusing everyone about what I am trying to find out.
The MSD was wired before and reported the rpm's to the FAST EFI module hand held.
Now that the FAST is removed from the car I have the old wires (not used before) from the wiring harness that are white and yellow and brown I believe. They are not going anywhere and sit by the wiper motor.
And of course the MSD does have a grey wre which is a sending wire.
How to wire them all together to make the original Tachometer work now is what I am after advice on.

Hopefully that better explains my dilemma:)

Hello.
I posted last week but haven't received anything that shows exactly where the two wires are supposed to go.
One Brown and the other Yellow and White.
Does anyone know or have a picture of them on the 67?
No idea where to connect them.

To better explain, the two wires are located by the wiper motor and open there.
They have two small prong connectors that look like a u shape.

I presume the wires you are referring to are in the stock wiring harness......right?  If so (according to the wiring diagram) the brown wire is the Tach wire that would attach to the (-) negative terminal on the coil and the other wire should be the white/orange/purple that would attach to the (+) positive terminal on the coil and the yellow wire would also be attached to the (+) positive terminal on the coil.  These wires would have been disconnected upon installation of the 6A and the new wires from the 6A would have been connected to the coil, distributor, and tach as follows.....

Orange wire to the (+) positive terminal on the coil
Small Black wire to the (-) negative terminal on the coil
White wire connected to the original distributor wire
Gray wire connected to the original brown tach wire
Smaller Red wire to the ignition key
Large Red wire to the (+) on battery
Large Black wire to the (-) on battery

Those wires that were removed and not re-used at the original wiring harness should have been taped, folded back and tied down to the original harness.

Hope this is what you are looking for.

BTW.....here is a link for the MSD installation instructions......http://www.americanmuscle.com/msd-6a-digital-ignition-7995-install.html

One minor correction to the link I listed above.  The web page I linked to above had another link to a PDF file for the MSD installation....well I inserted the link to the web page instead of the link to the PDF file.

So here is the correct link for the official MSD 6A installation instructions.......http://1.cdn.lib.americanmuscle.com/files/14221-14222.pdf

Hi Jerry.
Thanks for the posts and information. I have the car at Pro-Stock getting some items addressed so I haven't had a chance to try the wiring.
I may have it back tomorrow or Wednesday with any luck.

I will post as soon as I can try:)

I want to hook up my repro/stock tach in my '69 which has never been hooked up because I had an Autometer in the car that's gone now. I have a MSD 6AL ignition box, MSD distributor and MSD coil in the car. I don't want to fry anything so I need some clarity how to get it working properly. Am I using the stock wiring from the harness (fork connector with 2 wires, another fork connector with one wire) that hang by the wiper motor to connect to coil? There is talk about some filter for the tach, is there a filter in this tach? YES or no? MSD says connect gray wire from ign box to somewhere which I don't know where! So what I need to know is: am I simply hooking up stock wires to coil from harness to make it work? IF that doesn't work am I using the gray wire from the MSD box to get the tach to work and where does that wire go, and what about this "tach filter? MSD's instruction booklet for the 6AL box says "bypass in-line filter. Thank you for any help
