Bolt for front wheel fender mouldings
« on: September 26, 2014, 01:54:33 AM »
Hi

I am searching for the bolts that hold the front wheel openings mouldings for my 1969 Camaro. I have the small screws for the back mouldings but the front seem to need bolts. I read somewhere the bolt is Part Number 3853846, AMK products page 103 under GM horns (same bolt that holds the horns onto hood latch).

Is this true or where can I get these bolts? I want the most original possible.

Thanks

Jack

Aren't the bolts you are looking for the *same* bolts that hold the inner fender  to the edge of the fender's wheel opening?  ie...   no extra bolts needed?

They use the existing fender outer-to-fender inner bolts - no "extra" or "special" bolts required.

Does your bolt have an anchor image on top? Is it a light silver color?

The part number in the AIM is the same for the horns, the zinc plated pinch point with captured serrated washer. I have seen unrestored cars both ways, however Steve Shaugers 14 k mile RS/SS has the Zinc ones as did the unrestored 45k miles RS/Z we had certified in 2007 both were 04C builds.

The way I understand  the AIM it is only correct for Z22 and Z23 cars. The standard no wheel opening trim cars used the regular bolt.

re; 69 Camaro A.I.M, upc Z21. item# 4, 3853846, added by revision 4 in late 1968 ( hard to read the full date in my crappy copy)
I believe some cars did get the bright zinc bolts. Some of what I understand is based on talking to other Camaro restorers who have seen these on original cars.
Never say never  :>)

Well I don't know about the serrated bolts, but my 06A Norwood RSZ28 has dark phosphate bolts, they have "RBW' head markings, original, non serrated.

I recently restored a 02B Los Z28 and it had a mixture of "RBW" and "anchor" bolts also non serrated, very original car.

Both cars have wheel well trim. BTW.

I thought it was odd when I was messing with the unrestored cars... however a dark colored bolt would look more out of place than a bright bolt in contrast to the trim. Since every bolt was bright on the two low mile 04C's it couldn't have been an owner moving bolts as there are only 2 more of the particular bolt in the car. (horns).
JohnZ's 02D car has phosphate your 02B has phosphate, it would be interesting to know when the change occurred and if it was universal.

If a car were in the weather there would likely be no traces of Zinc except under the washer on the bolt head as it is a sacrificial metal.

IF the washers are/were serrated then I am pretty sure they were ZINC as I have not located a phosphate plated, captured serrated washer, 5/16 pinchpoint on 69's, if you have please let us know.
