67 gas cap
« on: August 05, 2014, 02:10:24 AM »
I have been driving my 67 Camaro about every other day 50-60 miles and I noticed a fuel smell inside. I have all new hoses and clamps and gas tank seal and such fine. After a longer drive I stopped at a parts store and as I walked away from car I heard a "tea pot whistle " pitched sound. It was coming from fuel cap and I released cap and it had a great deal of pressure. The vapor smell was exactly what I have been smelling. I can drive the car 5 miles and cap has pressure, what is wrong? ???

The cap contains a 2-way vacuum/pressure valve which allows air entry to replace the volume of fuel used so the tank doesn't build a vacuum (which can result in fuel starvation or partial collapse of the tank), and allows pressure relief at a certain pressure level to avoid distortion of the tank. Both sides of that valve need to be working.
