Green tip dipstick
« on: June 25, 2014, 11:45:21 PM »
Anybody ever determine if the green tip round finger grip dipstick was ever used on the 69 DZ engine? I found one I had stashed away and remember this being touched on at some point. The handle has the indentation on the neck of the handle and this is on the stick. Just curious. This could probably be used on any number of small blocks I'm thinking if not used on the DZ engine. The one for my engine has the flat finger grip.

Yes I have read and participated in that thread but it abruptly stalls. I'm going to assume that it's either for a much later small block or service replacement. I haven't actually bought anything over the counter, I'm thinking it came from one of the small blocks I collected sometime in my life, or somebody gave it to me. I do see that there is a big difference though in the stamping on the stick plus that small divot on the "factory" green tip. I'll mark it as small block over the counter.

I was looking at my dipstick after it was cleaned up and it has a crayon line down the middle of the handle. I think it had to be before it was bent

I was one of the respondents on the original thread's poll - 01C Z with the flat tip, marked "use GM 6041".

The only two green tips listed in the poll were November 68 cars - interesting. Maybe the line ran short that month and used a secondary vendor or supply ? Possible, but I think all were marked with the "Use GM 6041" stamp on the stick -

My 70Z LT-1 has the green tip dipstick.

Does it have the dimple in the neck of the finger grip and same stamp as my first post or something different altogether? I'm leaning towards mine being either a later stick or an over the counter. Might have to hit the  second gen NastyZ boys and ask what they have to know for sure.

A couple of pics - flat tip original is on the bottom in one pic, "GM 6041" is the other.

The other sticks are NOS earlier ones, including the grey tip that came in the box with my 1969 dated NOS 302 pan.

Not intending to HiJack, but I have never seen or heard of a dated oil pan? Where would date be located?

When I read that, I assumed it was the box it was in that was dated, but maybe the pans did have a date?

Instruction sheet, box and the old part number that was superseded in the early 70's. Part number only showed for a couple of years if I remember correctly. I'd have to go back and look to see, but I think the instruction sheet is dated 1968, the stick was a '68 number, too. I think we determined it may have been a generic stick at the time if the first thread.

If you'd like to split hairs, we determined it was not a '68 pan, but an NOS pan for a '69 302. Maybe I should have worded it a little differently, but it is what it is. When I get back home, I'll be glad to look up the thread and the part number again and post it.
