vin removal

I'm wanting to have my shell run through the derusting/dipping process. They said I have to remove my vin and cowl tags. How can I get new vin rivets or is there a legal process to do this???

I wouldn't remove either. Instead, find another method to remove the rust.

If you remove those tags, I think there will forever be suspicion surrounding your car. Anytime I hear " I had to remove the VIN tag", or I see new rivets, automatically my mind thinks some kind of fraud, or misrepresentation is taking place. Keep all your tags in place, its not worth the questions, and trying to explain that your car is legit.

Thanks for all the insight. I just set up an appointment for the Dustless blasting guy to come next week.

Scares me with wet abrasive getting in places and not drying out. Anyone used it?

It uses crushed glass and I think a rust inhibitor.  I want to buy one but I dont think the little lady would like me quitting my day job. :P

About those VIN rivets, it has been on my mind too. My dash is rusted out at the windshield clear up to the lh defrost duct hole (&@#& Ohio rust!)  >:( ,how and what will happen to the tag if dash is replaced? I apologize if this a little off topic, not wanting to hi-jack post. :-[

 I would try to cover the rivets and tags with a layer of RTV silicone. That should be impervious to most anything.
You can peel it off later.
If you get rivets to change on a dash, get the correct ones and just don't say anything.

I too have wondered about the cleaning very well and applying silicone to  the tags and rivets front and back so there is no possibility of them contacting the solution.
IF I HAD TO REMOVE/REINSTALL A VIN for a Customer, they would be required to sign off on the fact that they requested the removal and metal replacement and that they understand the value could be reduced and it's authenticity may come into question. I would fully document every single thing I did on HD video, including the reason, showing other hidden VINS and showing the metal work required and then the REINSTALLATION, I would keep a copy of everything to cover my ass in case there were ever a question or he said she said episode.

If doing any blasting I use multiple layers of Gorilla Tape over tags.
