Dealership Memorabilia & Dealership Info
« on: May 10, 2014, 09:52:15 PM »
I thought it was a good time to start a thread that hopefully over time we can add a huge amount of dealership information and memorabilia to for assisting others with what might be both available or to know what to even search for. Items like what a dealership used for advertising which includes all the things they placed on a car prior to sale. Dealer information on when a dealership went out of business or changed ownership and possibly names. With so many Chevrolet owners attempting to find out when their car was manufactured and the dealership that ordered now is a good a time as any to start. Austin (bullet65) started the ball rolling with his thread http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=12174.0
Hopefully this thread can compliment and assist others now and in the future.
Some Ammon R Smith items that can be found-
These can be found as they were used for years! Just a simple key chain with a different front and back face.

Tube of three plastic golf balls!

Golf tees

Lubrication Stickers

Everyone probably knows Ammon R Smith was famous for Dave Strickler and Bill Jenkins 409 Chevrolets.

Ammon R Smith on Carlisle Ave. very close (almost across the street) from the York Fairgrounds, the Oldest running fair in the country.

That 2nd floor always seemed loaded with cars and a many a time we would check out what was there. Quick story! Our 69 L78 Nova had arrived and I went in to see it and like other cars I was told it's upstairs so I'm walking up this long ramp they drove the cars up and I hear this nice sounding car rumbling and a couple varooms to a healthy roar and to my surprise it was our Nova. They would leave the keys in the car and someone just got in, started it up and was revving it up. I told the guy it was my car, pulled the keys, locked it up, and immediately took the keys to the salesman. I could not pick the car up yet as I was not 21 and had to wait until I was 21 to apply for a loan at our credit union, so the car sat there for a few weeks. Oh the memories!

Mid City Chevrolet & Sport Chevrolet
My Dad started selling Chevrolets and Oldsmobiles in 1958 at what most people called "Mid City Chevrolet" in Laurel, MD. It's still there but changed ownership I assume as the name is different and belongs to one of the conglomerates. Can someone let us know the current name? I left that area in 1962 so not sure what they might have sold muscle car wise but do remember a 62 white with red interior 327 Chevy with a 4 speed and telling my Dad when I grow up I'm going to have a car just like this and make a $100 a week. Foolish kid! LOL
This emblem was a gift from a CRG member which is proudly displayed with some of my personal memorabilia.

My Dad then went to work for the newly opened Sport Chevrolet and know they sold many muscle cars.

I love the 55 convertible picture with everyone standing around gawking. Ah, the good ol' days when the new car lineup was kept under wraps and it was a HUGE deal to attend the unveiling! Search lights, candy, popcorn, sodas, balloons, dealer trinkets, etc... I have a lot of great memories of going with my mom and dad to see the new cars throughout the 60's. One of the small thrills you have as a kid. Too bad kids today don't get that same thrill.

Thanks for sharing Chick. Great pictures.

In the 55 picture all the guys have a smile on their faces and the gals don't. :)

Chick..  super photos and memorabilia.... :)    I learned a few things reading thru all this.. :)
1)  the York PA area has been a 'Chevrolet hi performance area' for a long while.. in the '60's and still is...
2)  You are a 'second generation' Chick,
3)  You and I are almost the same age..  (2 June here).. :)  .. and we probably have a lot of very similar memories of those times.. :)

PS.  Back then $100/week was a very decent wage ..   solid middle class..  :)

Well I was hoping this would or could be a thread to post dealer info which might help when someone in the future does a search. Hopefully others can post info.
OK, our 68Z came from Roger Dean Chevrolet in Charleston, WV.
In 1971 the Roger Dean Charleston dealership changed hands and was re-named Tag Galyean Chevrolet. Prior to Rodger Dean Chevrolet the dealership was a Lincoln dealership named Charleston Motors. The dealership is long gone now and a municipal building is in its place.

Chevelle SS 396.  http://www.mywvhome.com/seventies/roger_dean2.mp3
Both commercials from WKAZ Radio.  The Chevy spokesman is the famous Lloyd Bridges.
Rodger Dean owned many dealerships over the years and moved from WV to FL where he owned Roger Dean Chevrolet (still family owned I believe). Mr. Dean passed away in 1979.

My car came from Jack Lempke in Youngstown ohio. It has closed or changed hands and only thing I found on Google was a break in about 68. Any members in that area? I wonder if Lempke is spelled right

I've had the same problem. I know the original dealerships on two of my cars. Gustatson Chevrolet, 7th and D streets, Eureka Ca (No longer in business) and Wilkins Chevrolet, 6970 N Military Hwy, Norfolk Va. (same family owned but now Bay Chevrolet)
I have googled and searched and found very little. A few old newspaper ads and a story about one of the owners that was a former race car driver but other than that no luck. Was hoping to find some old dealer pictures like Chick has but so far nothing. Also continuing to look for memorabilia.

Wilkins Chevrolet: The history of the Norfolk Motor Company begins with its founding back in 1938, started up by Walter Wilkins of the Wilkins family and located at 1500 Monticello Avenue. Wilkins Chevrolet opened for business on Military Hwy. in 1955, followed by the establishment of Bay Chevrolet by Walter Wilkins II, the current owner and President, on February 11, 1981.

And then there is my favorite Chevy dealer sign in LA, which dates all the way back to the fifties.
