Questions on 68 RS SS 396 smog set-up
« on: September 09, 2006, 03:06:39 PM »
Are all the pieces to the smog equipment camaro specific for a 68 RS SS 396 w/AC???????

Secondly are they dated parts??

Also would 879 & 178 exhaust mani's be correct for a 09 built 68? I had read there were some mid year changes

1. Yes, 879 and 178 are the correct exhaust manifolds.

2. I don't believe the A/C made a difference on the smog equipment, but talk to Les (mr396). His car's currently for sale on ebay by the way, so HERE'S A LINK for you to look at.

3. Yes, some of the parts like the pump are date coded. The upper bracket is also a 1968 big block only part (see the pictures) becuase the diverter mounts to it.

Thanks bertfam :)

Oops, had to modify, I thought you were referring to this one
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1968-CHEVROLET-CAMARO-RS-SS-396-AUTOMATIC-COUPE-AIR_W0QQitemZ190028269661QQihZ009QQcategoryZ6161QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

the interesting part is, the car Im refering to in the picture above is an exact duplicate,  color/vinyl top and option wise, although its been repainted red, it doesn't have the 8 track, pw, or tach. It does have the console, but with a clock, no gauges. And its #'s  LOS car, even built the same month :o

The smog rails should be the same for all BB applications that year though, right????????

If you meant the SMOG TUBES, the answer is no. Apparently the A/C tubes are different than the non-A/C tubes, so I was wrong in my replay above.

I wonder if BB truck would be the same. I think I have a set-up off a 69 in storage?

All the tubes should basically be the same with the exception of the bends and length. More than likely you could probably get any year tube to fit any other year big block with slight modifications as required for clearance issues. If you have some in storage, I would give it a shot! What have you got to loose...

...Here's a good link to some info on Smog systems. It's a link to Jerry MacNeish's website...

   http://www.z28camaro.com/smogsystem.html

...I recently was looking into this myself for a system for my 68 (RS/SS BB)...

Can anyone tell me what the value of a NOS complete smog system still in the original boxes with the original tags still attached is? This includes a set of exhaust manifolds as well.

Thanks

Mark

Hi Mark,
...probably not worth a whole lot, ...maybe $100 bucks?  ...I'll buy it :)

...of course I'm kidding!, ...personally I think that would around / be approaching $2000, ...maybe/probably more.  If you have ALL the parts NOS, ...I think it will easily be over 2k...

This one's not "apples for apples", but it could help you on your price:

As Kevin said, in the boxes and with the manifolds, it's obviously worth more than this example.

...To add to what Phil said and ref. the Ebay link he provided,...   that system (from same seller) I believe is reserved at about $1200 - $1500. Noting that aside from the pump, pulley, diverter valve and the brackets the other parts are (I'll say 'I believe') reproduction.
If your parts are NOS (andwith what you have, ...ie manifolds and all), ...it's worth 'a bit' (as in a lot) more...
