Looking to buy a gen 1 camaro that can have fun with. I have a tight budget. I came across a 68 camaro clone and I really don't know what all that means. Attached are a couple pics and brief description from seller. FYI he's asking 25k. I don't want a numbers matching car.

Reasonable price. Since you are looking for a fun driver, evaluate it like any used car. How many miles? Post pics of the trim tag?

By clone I think he meant it was not really a SS. Looks OK to me. You would be in great shape if you could get it for 20K. My opinion is it is a little dated looking and most people are building them these days with LS engines.

LS engines are great..  super power, much better gas mileage, esp when you install the appropriate O/D trans with it, but don't you wish the LS engines were not so UGLY?  :)

Check for bondo:  lips of rear quarters(inner),rear lower quarters ,lower/rear front fenders,esp. passenger. Around rear window molding, seam which runs from rear window to trunk( old drag cars tend to crack in this area) Areas where roof attaches to full quarters(cracks) IMO these  were areas of problems ( held water or cracked due to twisting) body men encountered years ago with theses cars. Start there and of course check everywhere else ! floor pans, trunk, area where water exits through cowl. Body lines.

As was stated, from there mechanically, inspect like any other car. All being sound , he's probably in the ballpark on price-----read on for more opinions. Look up old posts.

Most of those look 'good', except for the one with exposed coils.. :)      How pretty can an engine be when it has to be covered over with painted plastic to make it look OK??    :)
.. or maybe I'm just too 'old school'...  :)   (Small block chevys forever, babee....!  )

I dont disagree..  I hate the plastic covers.  Id rather see the engine.  I guess when you have to appeal to the general public you have to make covers to make it visually appealing..  Oh well I am happy with either old school or new technology (minus the covers).  Also depends on the look and style you are going after.   ;)


BACK ON TOPIC:

I would say most have already hit the common questions to ask about or look for.  I agree with Charley too, I would offer him 18-20  and go from there; as long as everything else checked out.  You can personalize it later on.  Bottom line is if you like the car and it meets your standards then go for it.

Cowl tog looks a little rough. Haven't seen car in person but is the firewall in picture look dented? And does vin line up?
