trunk latch on 69 z
« on: August 21, 2013, 04:05:03 PM »
Is the trunk latch painted body color or the spatter paint on a 1969 z 04D Van Nuyys car?  I know the latch attached to the deck lid is body color.

If someone has pictures that would be great.  thanks

Scott,

Attached are a couple of photos showing my original never restored trunk latch...  I hope this helps.  I think you can see that the latch got some overspray from the body paint, and was incompletely painted by the trunk splatter.  Based on looking at lots of similar areas on many original chevys over the years, I would also suspect there were variations from car to car, since it basically was an 'overspray / transition' area of the car.

Your pictures look just like my car.   Body color, over spray, trunk splatter paint "splattered" on.   Not an abundance of body color or splatter and some area's on the tail panel with neither.

Scott  Here is a picture of one judged at the Nationals last year and was judged to be correct. I know there are many variations of the trunk spatter but this would be an easy fix for you as you would only need to paint your latch and not have to touch up the spatter.   Scoop

thanks scoop.  Larry C. tells me a little spatter on the latch with the body paint wouldn't hurt and that is what we did.  Thanks

Thanks for posting that John.  Yours looks very nicely done.

I suspect that there was variation, depending on the person doing the job, that persons mood, day of the week, etc. etc.

These last two posted; although hard to see the one being it dark green, if you look real hard it looks as though it has a similar tape line across the lid of the trunk area due to the over spray onto the trunk latch bracket.  But like you said bc there is definitely variations..

Yes, Johns car looks like they masked it the same as mine, whats funny about that is: my car is 08C and is closer to Gary's car (orange Z) of 09B (i think), than John Z car of 02D. So Just depended on the day and the mood, of who was spraying it, or masking it off I suppose. A very similar topic to the bell housing topic currently going...

IIRC, the latch attached to the trunk of LOS cars wasn't painted body color??

Bullitt65;  you may be right about it depending on the day, mood and who was spraying, if it were masked off.   My car is 08C too; but not masked off.
