Build sheet vs. "IBM"
« on: August 05, 2013, 07:36:10 AM »
Ok so I was surfing the web and saw an old thread http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=445459&page=all
on the Yenko site about a guy who bought a pretty original unrestored 69 Z and under the carpet he found a IBM card. I have seen my share of build sheets, mostly being found on top of the gas tank on the drivers side. The 69 Z mentioned is a early Norwood pre X code car, and this IBM card was found under the drivers side footwell area. I have not heard of a IBM card prior to this, and was just curious if anybody else has discovered this paperwork on a Norwood car, and if it is as common as running across the build sheet on a los angles car? The IBM card is described as having the options for the car on it. Please post some pics if you guys have them.
 thanks for any help

Kurt identified the 'paper' found to be 'an ibm card', not the broadcast or build sheet?   and it definitely has the punch holes and cut corners of an ibm computer card.. BUT it seems to serve the same purpose as the build/broadcast sheet, in that it identifies the car and it's parts, and confirms it is an original car!  OR am I wrong?
so given that this is a Norwood car, which supposedly NEVER had build sheets..  What is the possibility of finding such a card in an original car?  and where else besides under the carpet should we look?   How many cars have been found and identified via cRG as having such a card?

Gary,
In Jerrys book he shows a couple of Norwood cars build sheets. I think it was less likely to find these in a Norwood car than a Los Angles car, but obviously they were hidden in some of them that left the factory.
Secondly I think if guys that have discovered originals post their info, hopefully they can describe where they were found.
So lets just stay tuned....

*Correction Jerrys book shows 1 broadcast sheet, Hoopers 69 Camaro reference book shows a couple.

That's the "Retail Delivery" card the dealer is supposed to send back to GM once the car is sold. (HERE'S one that's in better condition.) It's VERY rare to find one of these since it was a requirement for the dealer to mail it back as proof the car was delivered to the buyer. The 67 and 68 cards don't list anything other than the VIN, paint code, trim color and the original dealer code and zone. This is the first 69 I've seen, so apparently they also list the drive train codes and maybe the options?

Ed,

In that 'clean copy' of the IBM card you referenced, I saw no evidence to document the equipment on the car, just the VIN... or did I miss the part with the engine/trans/etc.. ?

I also found one of these IBM cards. I have a los built z, october 1968 build, short rear stripes and short rear spoiler.
couldn't make any sense of the punches. Would need the record data to decifer.

John,

Did GM want these cards returned as much for the trade in data?

Someone in the know please elaborate on what these cards were for (substitute for build sheet?) and what did GM need them for once the car was delivered? maybe a confirmation to go with the statement of origin paper?

Well, the 69 card in the yenko.net thread ISN'T the retail delivery card.

I received an email from Warren and he said he believes that's the Chevrolet / Fisher Body order card.  He has a bunch of those from various years and plants. The card found in the 69 Z28 is a little different than the ones he has but has most of the same info. He believes they were either used to start the process for a new body/check that the plant has all the necessary materials to build the car, or maybe inserted into a machine that would read the punches and then print out the broadcast sheets.

So kind of out of the norm to run across one it sounds like?

Yes, they are seldom seen.  While I have a number of them from fullsize Chevies, all found in owners manual packets, the one from that 69Z is the first one I have seen actually found inside the car.  Sometimes you just get lucky.  When taking apart a car with the original carpet, you really have to check all spots under it.

Anyway, here is one from a 68 St. Louis built Impala.  Again, the one from that 69Z is a different form that the ones I have.  I'm sure there were a number of variations between the plants.
