I know that this has been discussed before, but i would like to clarify the use of the 40987 fuel pump. I have one on my 57K 69 Z/28, which I thought was original. All of the info I have read states that the 40669 is the only correct pump. I have read several threads on CRG, but was wondering if any new info has surfaced since?  Thanks for any info!!   Bill

I've been wondering the same thing. My 07A X77D80 car as far as I know has never had the original engine out and it has many of the original parts still on it, alt, dist., carb, etc. and my AC fuel pump just recently went bad and I assumed it was the original and it is also a 40987. So would be very interested in any info as well.

Thanks for the reply. I guess the only way to document this is for someone to have a survivor or one owner car with the 40987 pump. Hopefully someone out there will be able to provide some info either positive or negative! Good to know that someone else has the same issue.  thanks  Bill  Smiley

After 44 yrs, I'd be surprised to see a 'functioning' original fuel pump... even if unused..  Smiley

They are stamped but if standing on the right side of the car looking down it would be up top to the left or upper back section which is impossible to see without a small mirror when the pump is installed (underneath the car trying to place a mirror in that top section and shine light additionally). The few judges I have talked to look for the correct AC on the pump as again the # is difficult to see even with a small mirror & flashlight. Been there done that! Smiley

Bill, the only AC pumps I have found on survivor 69 Z's are 40669. The pump you have is dated the 57 day of 1971 and is therefore a replacement. In all first gen camaros and including 1970, the pump # was preceeded by two letters . The first letter represents the month and the second the year. For instance I have a pump on one of my june of 69 built Z's that is EI40669 which decodes to May of 1969. I believe in 1971 the first digit letter was replaced with the day of the year ,which is why your pump decoded as it did. The second letter/year decodes as follows:  67=G, 68= H, 69=I, 70 J & 71=K.

Steve, great information. I couldn't wait to get out the pump and figure out what I had. Okay here goes. The pump has a Julian code of 087, but the next character seems to be a T. It is smaller than the other characters, so I was wondering if it could be the top of an I which you noted is for 1969. These characters are followed by the 40987. My car is an 05C with an engine code of 0505DZ. The Julian date could work, but I agree with you that the Julian dates were not used in 1969. That 4Th character just puts a thread of doubt in my mind, but not enough conclusive evidence to suggest that it could be a viable possibility. The bottom line is I will be looking for that 40669 pump for the car. Again, thanks Steve for great info!   Bill  Smiley
