Checked the same section in a Feb-71 edition and it had the same information.

Chevy continued the ZL1 block into the early 1970s because it was needed by the SCCA Corvette racers and was used by other racers

Then Chevy gave Don Yenko permission to buy the blocks from Winters

One of the Yenko collectors has the original letter from Chevy where Yenko was given permission to purchase the 3952318 alu block directly from Winters Foundry.
The letter is dated on Aug. 1, 1974

Yenko had them machined by another company.

If my memory isn't failing me (again), recalling: from the mid-70's, when I hung around the shop of a Trans/Am racer; he ran a '69 Z28 (he bought new in Dec'68 until the body was too older to run, then switched to a '73 body)...  I remember discussions of a 'new' all aluminum 427 being available for around $10K at that time..  I believe it was in short block, or long block form for that price.. ie. assembled.

Believe it or not the production run of ZL1 Camaros carried both 12/12 and 5/50 warranties. That meant Chevrolet was on the hook to service them well into the '70s as the clock started when a car sold, not when it was built.

They must have had some inventory of short or fitted ZL1 blocks.
