Need Help 69 camaro decoding RS/Z28??
« on: August 20, 2008, 10:23:21 PM »
A few mths back I picked up a 69 Camaro that the previous owner had been drag racing for quite some years off and on.. He really was'nt much into the nostalgia of the 69 camaro, did'nt know much about the numbers and what not and was actually only selling it to buy a lighter FOX Body stang for bracket racing..So anyways, He tells me the car has the orginal 12 bolt rear end in it and also has the RS/Z28 grill /hidaway headlights,,,so that got me thinking and I scraped off the Cowl TAG and here what it reads ST 69 12437 NOR104366 BDY just below reads TR 711  71 71 but no X code ..The car is an orginal 4 spd, (Now has a powerglide) the clutch pedal is still there and has factory front disk brakes & the rear back up Lamps below the bumper...I have been told by some that there were such models made that were early for the 69 year and were PRE X- Code ..Is this true?? And if this helps the VIN# is 124379N502055 ...  Is this car a Z28/ RS or what do I have? Thanks, any help would be great

See the following:  http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml  and quoting from the same:  "The Xnn codes were a mid-1969 model addition to the Fisher body cowl tags of Norwood-built Camaros, starting with the 12B (second week of December) build week. (CRG has found 12B cars both with and without these codes."

Your VIN, '502055' would have been built in Sep 68, several months prior to Norwood introducing the X Code format.  See the following link:  http://www.camaros.org/geninfo.shtml#HowMany

TR 711 71 71 indicates interior trim code 711 indicates standard, black interior;   71 71 is the upper and lower body color; LeMans Blue.  This info. is also found at the above link.

Post some photos of the firewall and the rest of the car... afterwards I am sure we are going to request some more but if the car has not been been messed with too much there will be clues.
Does the car have the rear package tray metal and seat support intact?

Alas, early builds (pre-mid December, 1968) do not have X-codes. In fact, there is no way to confirm it was a real z/28. However, as others point out, there are clues that will at least tell you if the car was a dual exhuast V-8 car. The firewall and rear seat support are examples. Another one is the existence of the plate welded to the frame inside the left rear wheel well. Best of luck with your car!
