master cylinder casting number
« on: February 27, 2015, 12:18:28 AM »
According to the CRG article on master cylinder a 68 manual brake should have a master cylinder with casting number 5452310( without bleeders) and power should be 5460465(with bleeders).
On my car 4 drums power I have a 5352310, also if you look at the picture on the CRG article you see a picture of a master cylinder attached to a booster without bleeders !! Can somebody shine the light on that one ?
thanks

So that picture is wrong ?
I'm trying to understand how the 5452310 (most likely after market) on my car worked for all these years.
I want to replaced it with a correct  m/c but I want to be sure what to look for and make sure a 5460465 will work.

Many aftermarket or replacement MCs will work fine.  The bleeders aren't necessary for brake action, they just make it easy to bleed out air that may become trapped in an angled MC.  I can assure you that the 5460465 will work as that is what I used when I replaced the parts store Bendix MC on my power drum brake '67.  BTW, that one without bleeders had worked fine for years back in the 80's when the car was a daily driver.  I did the same reading you did and was also confused by the pictures showing non-bleeder MC on a power booster but came to the same conclusion that Kurt pointed out above. Not sure the AIM even clearly shows bleeders. But pictures are just pictures.  Data speaks and certainly Kurt and the CRG have the data.  Unless more data surfaces, I'm convinced my car came with the 5460465 casting from the factory.  Finding a good one or a good rebuildable one may be a challenge, though.

Also with drum brakes, make sure you have residual pressure valves installed.  They're easy to do yourself if a rebuilt unit doesn't have them, which I discovered is more likely to be the case.

Read about it here: http://www.camaros.org/brakevalve.shtml#rpv

Thank you, glad to see i'm not the only one in this situation.
I think I found a M/C casting 5460465. Should be here rebuilt in a couple of weeks.
