Originality / Re: Hood latch finish - phosphate?
« on: July 04, 2022, 06:45:12 PM »
The original photo shows a serrated washer and a flat water holding on the horn's..BKH
Is there a running change in the AIM for it?
Having recently gone through the legends judging guide, before dec 68 got the serrated zinc plated pinch point on the horn.
If not mistaken the crop is of the Hot Rod test car, early LA built with the 68 rear stripe arrangement.  09A or 09B.
Here is another 09B LA Z28 original owner original paint. with the serrated zinc plated 5/16 indented head pinch point also has the 68 Rear stripe layout.

Lloyds assessment is spot on... You can buy the CORRECT JUTE material which looks just like the original and as Lloyd stated build undercoating on top in order to create the correct appearing pad (in all aspects).

Any plating difference could be the hardness of the metal being phosphated.
Here is another of the black car where the hook looks the same as the base.
And then of another survivor hood catch which I cleaned and treated with cosmolined too.

The one I pictured in the thread referenced above was a return line, it was 1/4" or  5/16" IIRC.
The original 3/8" lines I removed when I took the original fuel pump off my 71 Corvette were exactly as the one Steve Shauger showed in the above linked thread, they had no markings whatsoever.

I am planning on a running a trial using CERACOAT on exhaust manifolds, I have thoroughly cleaned an exhaust manifold and will be blasting with garnet at 100# per ceracoat instructions.
Planning on mixing something close to a natural castiron look and also doing chevy orange for the flanges and bolts on Big block manifolds.
Looking for something to keep the appearance of a low mile survivor for a decade or more without maintenance.

The above photo is one I took of the Black RS/Z survivor AFTER I cleaned and coated the parts with cosmoline.
IIRC The entire part is plated as an assembly, minus the spring, which probably would be affected by the heat and the process.
Hood hinges and hood catches are typically Manganese Phosphate, which is darker than zinc phosphate and often has a crystaline look prior to oiling.
Palmetto also sells Manganese phosphate - I plated some hinges and catches a year or so ago.

The tick marks are from when the stencil was separated from the section to be painted, the original die had slight skips every 4"-6" in the cut, when the section to be striped is removed it leaves a little fuzzy tick which shows when the stripe is painted.

The silver car above shows the mismatch when the 2 part stencil was applied.

Steve Shauger had/has an early September 68 built IIRC which has a terrible mismatch of the 2 part stencil, the front part and rear part of the stencil dive down and almost come to a V shape where they meet.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 1968 copo?
« on: June 12, 2022, 05:31:35 AM »
The Magic Mirror TT does not have the FEDERAL COMPLIANCE NOTICE like typical 1968 Camaro TT's, which is why it is believed the 68 COPO's received the tags.
IIRC the missing link is a POP for one of the 1968 COPO's to determine if the ENGINE suffix code was different than the other L78's.

If not mistaken the Orig Owner of the 68 Rally Green unconverted COPO said there was a Corvette Bronze unconverted car on the Yenko lot when he bought his car.

I like the lace tailpan and stripe!

Restoration / Re: D80 Spoiler Trunk Lid Sealing Tape
« on: June 03, 2022, 05:39:02 AM »
So when did they quit piercing the deck lid down low where the spoiler went?  My 08A car does not have any unused holes under the spoiler.

Long research topic on Deck lid emblem piercings covered here :http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=3752.0
The synopsis: when Firebird production was merged with Camaros at Norwood in April/May a non pierced decklid became necessary due to the fact that firebirds did not have emblem holes which matched Camaros AND the T/A spoiler would not cover like the Camaro spoiler did.

Only a few early LA cars have been found with the 68 stripe layout and the latest car know of, I believe was built the 1st or 2nd week of October.
We have 2nd week of September built Norwood cars which have the 69 style stripe layout.

The photos I have are from 10+ years ago before Lloyd owned the car, which is now owned by the Ferrari dealer in Toronto.

Lloyd here are photos of the black car these were taken months before you bought it, it appears it was "masked" due to a painting fixture it looks like it shows the fuzzy line.. but still black. - this would lead more credence to a fixture which held the covers during the painting operation.

The non attached blocks are blackened.
Not paint not coated it is a forced oxidation.
Here is the one off of Dave Beem's Yenko 01B - Bill Hunter removed all of the smog and carb fuel pump within the first month of owning the car, this was one of the totes.

Interesting would be to see a 10-10 car as they had the silver grill - so that means the doors would have silver painted on the edges - reverse of what we see in the above pics.

I wish i can find pics of Richard Mayskum's 10-10 RS Z (i had pics) to see what his doors vs grill would look like.
What would seal it up is if the tabs on the black doors showed evidence of the "masking" from the painting fixture. a fuzzy line on the black door in approx the same place.
