Decoding/Numbers / Re: BR Axle Code On A Z28

Doubt the plant would build one with a 3.07 and M21.  Would not be able to move the car.  Clutches would be worn out in a matter of months.  I have driven a Z28 w/ M21 and 3.55, would not get out of its own way.  If they were built, would have to be with an M20,

350 engine, 5K redline, 396-325hp engine, 5500K, 396-375hp, 6K redline.

There were tach shortages are the LA plant and many cars did not get the correct tach there.

No help on a drag car.  Have taken the front and rear off at different events and there was no difference in ET or mph.  This is an NHRA Stock Eliminator Z28 that runs 120-123 mph.

Once the distrubutor is set up with a short curve and light spring set on a Sun distrubutor machine, you're good to go.  Read the customer feedback on distributors on my website, www.z28camaro.com.

Sometimes you can get the same sound out of the 346 cam if you tighten the valves down to about .022".  What we've found in our dyno testing research is that you lose cylinder pressure when installing a higher lift camshaft such as the 140 so there are trade offs.  Bigger is not necessarily better all the time.  The 140 uses a lot of fuel on the street too.

All of the factory built 302's that were installed in Z28s received the "346" camshaft.  There were actually two upgrade versions, but they had to be purchsed over the counter.

Originality / Re: 1969 Z/28 springs

Exact original rear leaf springs are available from Rick's and other Camaro vendors.  About $380 a pair plus shipping.  We've installed them in many cars.

I think that Brent Roby or Brett Merriman would be good sources.  I know they have or had originals at one time or another.  Don't know if they visit this site or not.  I'll see if I have a phone number,

John,

Do you have a photo of the staming?  Would like to examine.  I can tell you if it's a real stamping or not.  The casting date seems too early for that assembly date.  John Z, any thoughts on the gap from May 22 '68 until Sept 13 '68?

Thanks and happy New Year,

Jerry

Gary,

The average factory built 302 ranges in the 340-360hp range.  With some carb work, stagger jetting and distributor work, you can pick it up another 20-30hp.  Blue printing brings these 302's to life.  Over 400 without any problem.  One of our customers has what I call a day two 69 Z28........headers, no smog.  Built the way it would have been in the late 1960's.  We did the engine, blue printed it, converted M21 to a M20 wide ratio 2.52 trans and 4.10 rear w/street tires.  Car runs in the mid 13's granny shifting about 7000 rpm.  Car would run in the high 12's with a good driver in good air.  We had a great grudge match this summer at Capitol Raceway with the Maryland Camaro club.  One of our members has a 454 in his 69 Camaro.  He kept asking the guy with the day two Z28 for a match up at the starting line.  Guess what, the Z ran a 13.55 and the 454 Camaro ran a 13.90.  It was all in good fun and we had a blast with this grudge race at the Xmas club dinner last week.

Happy New Year to all,

Unfortunately, all of the standard interior reproduction door panels are too "puffy" and don't look right.  NG!  Originals were much flatter in appearance.  Many of the Camaro owners who bring a car to the Camaro Nationals for the "Legend" concours class try to find good condition original interior parts.  This will improve your score over any reproduction interior.

The deluxe interior door panels are good and made by Al Knock.

Lets not forget Dave Strickler's "Old Reliable" NHRA Super Stock Z28 that won the 1968 NHRA World Championship title.  This Z28 dominated the ranks of Super Stock during the '68 season.  At last count, there were at least 40 major magazine articles written about this car during 1968 and 1969, and was the most famous Z28 of the late 1960's.

Of equal mention are Ben & Dave Wenzel and Bill Jenkins.  Both of these veterans debuted their brand new 1967 Camaros (a 1967 Z28 and L78) at the NHRA Indy US Nationals in 1967, crushed the competition, and won the both eliminators in Stock and Super Stock.  And this is the best part, Ben & Dave Wenzel are still racing their 1967 Z28 in Stock eliminator today.  Great guys!

Ed Hedrick, who was part of the Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins race team, put the 1969 Yenko 427 Camaro on the map in the NHRA national event winner's circle.  Ed was the only racer to win an NHRA national event when these Yenko cars were brand new.  This car and driver got plenty of ink!

Merry Christmas,

We've been using Ricks for years.  Never a problem, and if there is one, they will do what ever it takes to make you happy.  Unfortunately, it seems like the quality is going down hill with the 69 Camaro standard interior covers.
