General Discussion / Re: 1967-1969 Camaro Original Trunklid Value?
« on: December 22, 2006, 02:23:09 AM »
There were three different deck lids used in 1967, another updated version used for 1968 and three for 1969 models (the 68 deck lid carries over to early 1969 models).  Find out which one you have and that will help you sell it.  I have seen nice ones sell in the $300 price range......and much less too.  Have bought them at swap meets in the summer of 2006 for as low as $20.00.

I think Al Mainerd still owns it.  He was trying to sell it about a year ago.

This is something we are working on.  Five years ago, a car was not allowed into the Legend Certification unless it had the oem drive train.  If we do let cars in, they will take a hit on the replacement engine as it wouldn't be fair to people who have cars with an original engine.  This is why the oem cars have a high value.  Camaros that survived the past 38 years or so with the oem drive train deserve to have a higher value.

There still should be a place for cars with restoration blocks.  I don't think CE's will ever have a place in the concours arena unless there is dealer paperwork.  It's getting hard to find anything today, but the cars are still out there.  I just looked at a Z28 two weeks ago that was in storage for over 30 years sitting in a barn in Gettysburg, PA.

I would also check with Larry Eakin who runs the 1968 Z28 registry.  I think he's at www.1968z28.com.

I would also suggest scraping the pad with a razor blade to make it clean.  Many buyers would like to see the broach marks on the pad, and inspect the numbers.  Doing this might make the difference in selling the engine.  When we inspect cars and do appraisals, the first thing we look for is a nice clean engine pad.

Good luck,

John,

Year Round Transportation is very good and they have a good reputation.  Many of my customers have used these people.  It's a Mom & Pop family owned business.  Many of the bigger companies are very unreliable.  Happened many times here.  Said they would be here and never showed up.  Here is their number, 800-784-7951.  I'll call you today about an insepction.

Good luck,

Jerry

General Discussion / Re: Correct Date Code Carb or New?
« on: December 04, 2006, 01:32:49 AM »

Bertfam,

You are right regarding what carb dates work for the vehicle.  Carbs were installed at the assembly plant so the build date of the car is what is paramount.  I might add when buying an original carb, make sure it has the correct original base plate and metering blocks.  Over the years, many original dated carbs seem to have the thicker replacement base and changed metering blocks.  Very easy to tell.  In the driver's side rear corner area, the plate is a lot thicker.  Originals have very thin webbing in that area.  Most of the common Chevrolet Holleys use a 5583 front block and 4519 rear.  And by all means, go for the original carb, your car will have more value in the long run.  The new Holleys have the replacement base plate and hex head float bowl screws making them quite a bit different than the originals.

General Discussion / Re: How much effect does CE engine code have on value?
« on: December 04, 2006, 01:15:57 AM »
Speaking as a licensed certified appraiser and Camaro master judge, a CE block is better than a restoration block (dated restamped correct block w/ original numbers) only if you have paperwork from the dealer showing the engine change.  Any first-gen high performance Camaro with an incorrect engine takes about a 33% deduct in value verses a car with its original engine.  For many enthusiasts, having a replacement engine is not a big deal, for others.....it is.  In today's market, the average person cannot afford a pedigree 1969 Z28.  If you want to have your car judged in the concours "Legend" class at the Camaro Nationals, it's about a 200 point hit for not having the original engine.

Originality / Re: PTB stamps
« on: December 04, 2006, 12:48:43 AM »
According to a Norwood quality control I interviewed back in the late 1980's, PTB stamps designated paint body and trim inspection before the front fenders were installed on the car.  Most of the '68 and '69 cars have the stamps in sight but many of the 67 cars (not all) have the stamps behind the front fenders.  It was about 1987 when many Norwood plant workers transferred to the Baltimore plant due to the closing of Norwood.  Talked with quite a few of the Norwood workers during that time.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Ben's wife, Lana came home from the hospital Monday evening.  The recovery and therapy will be long but the family is confidant that she will have a full recovery.

Randy,

Thanks for the kind words.  I will pass them along.  I am sure that Ben and Lana will enjoy reading all of these posts once Lana recovers from the accident.  I did talk to Ben last night and Lana had just come out of surgery for a broken leg.  There are other injuries but I do not want to post anything else until I know for sure and also make sure that Ben does not mind me keeping the Camaro community informed.

Thanks,

General Discussion / Ben & Lana Wenzel in Automobile Accident
« on: November 24, 2005, 12:20:23 AM »

I just wanted to let all of you know that Ben and Lana Wenzel were in an automobile accident yesterday.  I don't know all of the details right now, only that Ben is okay but Lana is in the hospital.  I will post any new information as it becomes available.  Ben has been like a big brother and mentor to me for many years, please keep both Ben and Lana in your prayers over this Thanksgiving weekend.

For those that don't know Dave and Ben Wenzel, they race a 1967 Z28 in stock eliminator that Ben purchased brand new (only 602 were produced).  The Wenzel Brothers had an incredible 2005 season winning the division and finishing 8th in world points.

General Discussion / Old Reliable 1969 Z28 & Vegas Race Trip
« on: November 06, 2005, 04:33:26 PM »
Mike Strickler was asking me about the 1969 Z28 that his dad drive during the 1969 race season.  I remember that someone in the CRG group mentioned something about the original car being found.  I thought it was Bill.  Can anyone help?

I just got back last night from Las Vegas.  2509 miles from door step to door step.  Made it home in three days driving about 800+ miles a day.  A lot of driving but had a great time.  Ben Wenzel and I beat up on some good running 396 4-speed Novas for the class win in E/Stock and D/Stock.  Everyone was amazed to see a little 302 do so well in class eliminations.
