Other than finding a nice used one, you're probably stuck. You might want to call HEARTBEAT CITY (if you already haven't), and see who makes theirs. I believe they're all the same though.

When I was (MUCH) younger and repop parts weren't available, we used to go down to the 5 and dime (ask your parents), and get woodgrain shelf paper. There was one that was actually very close in appearance! It's probably no longer available, but you might try some of the home improvement stores or hobby stores in your area and see what they have in the way of contact paper and/or veneer.

Originality / Re: Air Cleaner 427/425hp L72?

I have a 427/425hp engine from a COPO Camaro.

Before we start, can you tell me the VIN and the suffix code on the block you have? I'd like to add it to the database.

Now, the problem is that you're adding something that never was from the factory. Not only was the COPO 9561 not available on a convertible, on the coupe it automatically came with the cowl hood so there's no "correct" air cleaner except the cowl air cleaner when referring to the L72 on a 69 Camaro.

You could go with the open element air cleaner to be "period correct", but you'll never be "factory correct" since there's nothing to reference. See what I mean?

I don't think it's a real one. From his signature, he's got a convertible.

ALL L72 CAMAROS CAME WITH A COWL HOOD.

While Buddy is correct that all COPO 9561's came with the "special ducted hood" (more info HERE), if the engine was installed by a dealer, then just about any air cleaner could have been used.

However, if you don't want to go with the cowl hood, for something "period correct" you would probably want to go with the standard open element air cleaner kelley referred to. I've heard that PARAGON makes a very good reproduction but John could probably verify this.

Restoration / Re: 69 interior door handle + window crank finish

You have a couple of choices:

1. Send them to someone that does pot metal. Places like CHROME PLUS or similar. (Disclaimer - I've never used them so I don't know how good they are.)
2. Buy reproduction from your local vendor like RICK'S, etc... (Note that some of the cheaper "China" parts aren't very good.)
3. Buy NOS on ebay. They pop up from time to time but can be pricey.

Craig, I sent you an email from a Corvair owner regarding your hub caps. Did you get it?

Ok Bryon. I finally got a chance to get under the car so here you go:

Year of car - 1968
Norwood or Los Angeles car - Los Angeles
Month and week of vehicle assembly - 05D
Engine - Believed to be an L89 but original block MIA
Transmission - M21 (Not original)
Driveshaft length (measured center of u joint to center of u joint) - 49.75" (plus or minus)
Driveshaft casting number - Unknown
Type of attachment to pinion yoke - U bolts
Code stamped on front of passenger side axle tube - BS0506G2 (3.31 Posi) and D168 casting date
Paint stripes and a picture (if possible) - White ?? and Orange?? (see picture)
Position of the u-joint flanges on each end - 30 degrees

My axle isn't original to the car but is correctly dated to the 05D build. Also note that there's some kind of writing in yellow (see 2nd picture below). I can't make out anything but an "M" so I have no idea if it's original or not, or what it says.

General Discussion / Re: Z28 starter bracket
« on: April 29, 2011, 10:05:43 PM »
You can't always go by the AIM drawings. That brace was used from the late 50's through the early 70's , and even though it was the same part number throughout production, it went through several changes along the way. HERE'S the first version from the late 50's, and HERE'S one from the early 60's. You can see neither look like the one used on the Camaro.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: POP DECODE HELP
« on: April 29, 2011, 01:17:41 AM »
My work paid for it, so I don't have to worry about it. The only problem with these stupid printers is the price of the ink! The ink is almost as much as buying a new printer!! But my work pays for that as well, so I guess I can't complain.

I scanned it in at 600DPI. My Lexmark 9500 network printer/scanner/fax/copy machine actually goes to 19K DPI (although I've never tried anything that big before).

Kurt, maybe because it's an automatic and not a manual transmission?

10C105452/V08200NR (should be V0820CNR...

350/300 with a Turbo 350 from a 1970 full size car assembled at the Southgate, CA plant. The engine was assembled on August 20th, 1969 at the Flint, Michigan plant. Yes, that block "should" be a 4 bolt main so it looks like someone at Flint screwed up!

And by the way, there was no Impala "SS" in 1970. 1969 was the last year for the SS and it was only available with a 427.
