Decoding/Numbers / Camaro Birthday
« on: November 17, 2016, 06:46:39 PM »
Its just dawned on me that my Camaro is 50 years old a few weeks, the trim tag suggests its a week 2 December Build, the Vin is :124377N150838.

Is there a way to refine this "week 2 dec" date to a day or a shift ?

It would be nice to know a more precise date to call its birthday. Do any records like this exist ?

General Discussion / Standard Fuel gauge questions...
« on: July 31, 2016, 03:40:45 PM »
Hi all, I have a standard early 67 Camaro fitted with a speedo and fuel gauge and since I have had it the fuel gauge seems to read whatever it likes.

Did the gauges read min and max between the lines or are they supposed to use pretty much the whole of the dial face ?  If I fill it right up the needle will point to around 5 o-clock and if its empty it will read below the min line, maybe to around 10 o-clock.

It doesn't look like any of this has ever been fiddled with, dash is original and the sender is undisturbed.

The gauge reads high and low but its massively exaggerated, is this normal or do I have a problem ?

General Discussion / Steel seat back top hooks
« on: May 21, 2016, 08:32:21 PM »
I have the seats on my standard 67 Camaro (Week two Dec 66 build)  apart to do a re-trim and when I took the steel seat back off I noticed the top middle hooks were doubled up, for some reason the factory had fitted two of the stamped steel parts to both front seats sort of stacked up.

Was this a standard thing with the steel backs or have I just found a quirk of the line that day ?

Its ironic, my other car had the steel seat backs and hooks missing by the time I bought it and although I found a seller on ebay for the seatbacks themselves I could not find anyone to buy the hooks off.

I made a pair following a template a kind fellow forum goer posted and these have been in use now for a few years although they took some time to make.

Now I may have two spares and nowhere to use them.  Isn't life funny sometimes !

Maintenance / Worn Column shift lever.
« on: March 21, 2016, 09:14:41 PM »
Does anyone have a good idea or solution for the problem of a worn  gear selector lever on a column change ?

Mine has been sloppy for a while and you don't need to pull the lever back to select between Low, D, N and R only to get the trans out of park.

I took it apart and cleaned it all out and spotted the problem is wear and chipping to the edge of the stepped part that engages with the ring.  The lever can sort of bump itself between the lock teeth.

Below is a picture of the ring and the stepped end. I can find a single vendor selling either the ring or the lever with stepped end anywhere.

Car is a fairly early 67 with a  327 and Powerglide, all original and never been fiddled with until now.

EDIT:  I cant seem to add pictures right now because of a fault with Photobucket, when it stops "having a moment" I will pop a pic on here. Sorry about that.

Originality / Hurst blower motor cage ?
« on: February 09, 2016, 06:27:47 PM »
I have been fixing up the daily driver 67 Camaro and finally getting the heaters sorted, they were filed up with mouse food/nests and the flaps were stiff and there was no airflow so a complete job was needed.

Fenders off, boxes out, shop-vac used, then a dip in the disinfectant bath for a day or two and its all looking better.

One of the things I found was that the rodents had eaten the plastic fan cage so today I removed its remains and put in the used tin one I had in stock.

Closer inspection of the remains of the old one showed a part number and a Hurst logo.

Did Hurst make fan cages for GM back in the day ?  I am sure as I can be that this car has never been taken apart, all the sealer and nuts look totally undisturbed, the core was a Harrison that matched numbers with the car pretty well so I think this is original.

Originality / Original Keys ?
« on: October 21, 2015, 06:00:54 PM »
Can anyone tell me what keys originally came with an early standard 67 Camaro, (Early Dec 66 Build date) please ?

I am trying to fix up the car and none of the keys do anything except the ignition key and that needs a good wiggle to make it work.

The ignition key will not fit in any other lock, the other keys don't do the ignition and don't do anything else.

I have 3 types of key, a round head, a round head with a knobble on and a sort of hex head, the hex head is the one that works in the ignition.

I cant get into the trunk via keys so I got in by removing the seat and then taking the lock out, I use a screw driver to get in now.

The glove box lock is missing totally.

I think I might buy a full set of lock but my main question is how many keys did a Camaro have and what did each key do ?   (ie: doors/trunk/glove box on one key and ignition on a different one or was it all on one key).

EDIT TO ADD:

Sorry, I forgot the actual report section on here and only looked in the forums for my answer, I have now found out from the excellent report what ought to be there.

Many thanks.

Restoration / 67, front bumper fit problems
« on: September 14, 2014, 04:52:51 PM »
Had another day in the workshop today and I trial fitted the used front bumper that I bought a while ago.

Very glad I did try it on before it went off for chrome because it does not fit, its not even close.

I can fit one side bolt in and then try to get the other side but the bumper seems to have too shallow a "V" and the side that I am trying to fit to the mount is still about 6 to 8 inches away but the middle is touching the front lower valance.

I have looked at loads of pictures of 67 Camaro front bumpers online since coming back home and I am totally stuck as to why this one does not fit because it looks like what I have here is a 67, its not had a bump or been bent.

Is there a big difference between 67/68/69 bumpers ? Or perhaps I have something else !

Restoration / Bolt ID, 67.
« on: September 13, 2014, 05:52:36 PM »
HI Folks,

I just dropped the little tray I have been storing all the nuts and bolts from my 67 Camaro restoration, its ok for the most part I have remembered where they go and have put the labels back where they go but I have 12 bolts that I am unsure of.

I have grouped them into two sixes that match, I think 6 are for the rear spring brackets that bolt up to the floor using J nuts but I don't know what the other 6 are for.

Can anyone help me ID them please ?

Restoration / Correct hog rings for upholstery.
« on: September 03, 2014, 09:20:16 AM »
I am re-covering my seats and I am at the point where I am going to be needing a set of Hog Ring pliers and the rings themselves. I have noticed the rings that were on the seats were round and all of the plier/rings kits I have found online use rings that look more like staples.

Are the round rings available from anywhere along with the pliers ?

Should I just not worry about it and the staple shaped rings will be ok?

Restoration / Correct bolts for seat rails to seats
« on: August 22, 2014, 05:46:41 PM »
HI All,

I have a mountain of old bolts here that I am working my way through and restoring.  I am now at the seat rail to seat bolts and I cannot find 8 the same (4 each seat).

Can anyone tell me or post is pic up of what the seat rail to seat bolts look like please ? or post a pic ?

I think they have a large washer on with little teeth under the washer because the rail has tiny marks in a circle where the bolts go but I am not sure because of the 8 only some bolt holes have the marks.

Restoration / 67 vent window rubber, clips ?
« on: August 13, 2014, 06:54:12 PM »
I have just got my new vent window rubbers for my 67 and I noticed when the old ones were removed the remains of three little clips.

Both sides are stripped, I managed to save two clips, the others were just rust.

Question shall I bother to find a set to put the rubber back in or should I just use the two I do have and forget the rest.

None of the vendors I normally use have these little things in stock so I am not sure where I would get more. possibly a breakers or from another forum member if they had some spares.

Restoration / 67, coupe, rear top headliner strip
« on: August 09, 2014, 03:48:51 PM »
Hi folks,

I have been on the interior tidy up and parts check today and I have found the rear top strip that the headliner is gripped by is badly rusted and not really able to be used again.

Do the aftermarket make one that is any good or would anyone have one for sale ?

This project is going to be a challenge for stuff like this, loads of little bits like this are missing or too bad to restore.

Restoration / Chassis J nut, 67 bumper mount
« on: August 02, 2014, 07:26:04 PM »
Hi All,

I am currently restoring an early 67 car that is in a really bad way, I am in England so finding parts is a challenge !

The front suspension/Chassis is out and has been fully disassembled and blasted and now its all painted I am fitting it all back together. I also did the front bumper mounts that bolt to the chassis and it is here I am having a problem.

The bumper brackets bolt to the chassis, at the end closest to the suspension there is a J nut that fits in a square hole in the chassis, I have one J nut, the other is missing.

I would like to find another so I can get both sides the same, I am re-using as many of the nuts and bolts as I can and I am blasting and Parkerising as  I need them.

Below is a picture of the restored bolt and washer and the one J nut I have.

Can anyone advise me where to get another ? does anyone have a spare J nut I can buy  ?
