Restoration / Power steering gearbox rebuild service
« on: September 07, 2017, 05:15:44 PM »
My gearbox is leaking from the input shaft (under the rag joint) and might possibly be messed up internally. I've only put 390 miles on the car since getting it back last August and the power steering went out last weekend, only to work again the next day when I was moving it around the property.
The pump is new (I wish we'd have rebuilt my original) but I'm told that shaft breakage is not uncommon. I haven't pulled the belt to check.

I found a business that rebuilds gearboxes, powersteering.com. Also read good things about west texas offroad (as far as rebuilding gearboxes). My first priority will be taking out the gearbox, then checking the pump. Anyone have recommendations on repair sources?

Garage Talk / My Pure Speed Racing Experience
« on: August 09, 2016, 04:30:42 PM »
WOW! I'm pumped to tell you guys about the anniversary gift from my wife! Some of you may remember my post where I took her to a Richard Petty Driving Experience in Sparta Ky for a birthday surprise, and she loved it. Well, she outdid me and sent me to Indianapolis Raceway Park (now Lucas Oil Raceway) for Doug Foleys racing program. I got 3 passes (330 feet, 1/8 mile, and 1/4 mile) reaching 126+ @10.15.

I've never been on a dragstrip, altho I attended a couple U.S. National's and went to Bunker Hill (Indiana) a few times for 1/8 mile drags. I loved Pure Speed, and I highly recommend it. I purchased the video package where my runs were recorded from a dash-mounted camera along with a second camera facing down the track. It plays back as a picture-in-picture with a superimposed speedometer (standard gauges in the cockpit but no speedo). To the guys that own and race cars, I envy you!

If you're interested, check out purespeedracing.com. I'm looking forward to going back next year, only this time with my 2 sons and my brother!

Garage Talk / Securing our cars
« on: August 08, 2016, 01:51:44 PM »
Guys, I was startled and disturbed last night reading a facebook post of a fellow that lost his Camaro to thieves while attending the Street Rod Nationals in Louisville over the weekend. I really got me to thinking. These old cars are relatively easy to snag, so I wanted opinions on what security measures other take while going away from home.
My idea would to tuck a smart phone away somewhere inconspicuous and wiring an "always on" charger to keep it alive. Then (heaven forbid) the car disappears, you could use the "Find your phone" app and track it.

Garage Talk / Oil level on dipstick
« on: July 01, 2016, 06:56:33 PM »
Ok, I want your opinions. As I was taking delivery of my newly-restored car, the guy that did the mechanical side of the job gave me a list of details including when it would be time to change oil....in 200 miles. He said depending on the type of oil filter I choose (typical car filter or the higher-capacity truck filter), I should mark the dipstick where the oil level falls after I've added 5 quarts and warmed the engine enough to circulate it. His thinking is that with the additional oil in the filter, my "full" mark would be below the factory full line on the stick, which I agree with. But where I tend to disagree, is that adding oil to bring it to read "full" is, in his eyes, too full - as in the crankshaft slinging oil - full. I can't picture this. First, there is a windage tray separating the crank from the oil; but more importantly (in my mind, anyway) is that the "extra" oil is in the filter, not the crankcase. An analogy that plays in my head says, if the filter held 3 quarts (an exaggeration), then there would only be 2 in the pan to be picked up by the pump, etc.
We may be talking an amount so small that it doesn't even show on the dipstick; it's more me trying to wrap my head around what point he's making with recording the "true fill level" on there.  Any thoughts?

General Discussion / Camaros.net password reset by admin?
« on: June 23, 2016, 11:29:16 PM »
I've seen references here to threads on Camaros.net, and have also seen them refer to CRG... so my question is, have any of you received an email from an admin on Camaros.net claiming to have reset your password? I got one, and haven't requested a reset, so I'm concerned it may be phishing or a scam

Restoration / "69 Front fender splash apron staples
« on: June 16, 2016, 01:19:51 AM »
Which way do they point? Ends bent over into engine compartment, or into wheel house? I know the rubber goes on the outside (in the wheelhouse), just not sure about the staples. Thanks!

General Discussion / I got to drive my car!!!
« on: June 13, 2016, 04:49:26 PM »
I know, to most of you it's no big deal. But I haven't driven MY (first) car since 1991, and that was just a few miles home from a botched partial (2 year) restoration. Then after a lot of years sitting almost forgotten in a corner of a barn.... She lives again! :) ;D I'll post some pics when I get it home in a week or two. The shifter was really stiff and it probably sounded like I'd either never driven a stick or I was double-clutching a dump truck, but I DROVE IT!!!!! 8)
Also making it memorable, my two sons had never heard it run - or ridden it in, and my wife was also along for the first of (I hope!) many rides. It's a good thing I have experience riding motorcycles with no windshields, 'cause tears in my eyes didn't stop me!! ::)

Restoration / Cowl hood solenoid wire routing
« on: May 19, 2016, 02:37:05 AM »
I'm installing a repop cowl hood (YearOne) and there doesn't appear to be a hole for passage of the solenoid wire to run thru the hood reinforcement. This was just relayed to me by the mechanic who is doing the last of the details in wrapping-up the restoration. A picture and/or measurements (of this area) from an original cowl-hood equipped car would be greatly appreciated!

Restoration / Bad Wiper Motor? Check this...
« on: March 14, 2016, 11:08:17 AM »
I thought my motor was bad, it wouldn't budge the wipers. After some poking around, I discovered the problem was my pump. The arm that contacts the "star wheel" to drive the piston had rusted in place, causing the motor to stall (the arm appears to rest on the star wheel and "float" until the pump solenoid is actuated). A bit of penetrating oil and some gentle persuasion got it all freed-up. Not to say the old motor couldn't use a freshening-up, but it is functional again. Thought I'd share my experience, those motors aren't cheap to have rebuilt.

Restoration / Vinyl tops: '67-8 vs '69
« on: March 08, 2016, 01:20:38 PM »
I received a vinyl top from Rick's Camaros (Ecklers) and it was too short, front to back. I wondered if the top was cut for '67 or '68, but since I don't have access to either, perhaps someone on here can help. To top it off, they won't take it back because they have a 90 day return policy (and I accumulated several parts in advance). Even if they made the mistake. So I am stuck with a top that doesn't fit.

If I can find out if it is correct for another year I'll post it for sale on ebay. Otherwise, I'm up the proverbial creek....

Maintenance / Terminals or clips for dome light, source?
« on: February 27, 2016, 06:17:23 PM »
I've just finished replacing my headliner and in the process of replacing the dome light, noticed a rusty terminal and a loose crimp where the bulb will snap in. Heartbeat city offers a harness, but all I need is the terminal ends which also are the holders for the bulb, which fits like a glass fuse. Who offers these? Thanks in advance!

Originality / Rear seatbelt delete?
« on: February 21, 2016, 10:53:49 PM »
Has anyone heard of rear seatbelts being an option, or left out? I have no rear belts, but I do have bolts and they are sealed by what appears to be factory sealant/caulk. I bought it in '77, and it was virtually unmolested (except for headers and smog-pump removal) with 59k on the clock
