Originality / Re: 1969 early L.A. cars

When it was possible, GM would buy from local suppliers as the cost to build vehicles at Van Nuys was higher than Norwood due to shipping parts to the West Coast.  We were still paying invoices to all suppliers at the Van Nuys Plant when the second generation Camaro/Firebird were being built and I was surprised to find that the Checker Motor Company built the frame rails.

The engine identification code for a 1969 Pontiac 400 manual transmission Ram Air III is "WQ," with a cylinder head casting code of "48."

General Discussion / Re: Points vs. Electronic Ignition
« on: July 30, 2021, 06:08:45 PM »
When I bought my 1970 BOSS 302, the previous owner had installed a Stinger ignition system.  I have the specifications when the distributor was calibrated at Stinger in Midway City, CA back in the 1970s.  As I've searched for parts for the Stinger and haven't found anything to date, I bought a 289 HiPo distributor as a back-up.

Brian - Below is some information on Cormier Chevrolet:

https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/auto-dealerships.1084547/page-2

I ordered my 1998 Z28 from Cormier and thought of getting one with the 1LE option, but the fleet manager talked me out of it as he thought it would take a long time for the Camaro to be built.  There was also only one other option available with the 1LE package, which was the trunk-mounted 10 CD player. - Mark

Danny - My friend's 1968 Z28 was BRG and I remember that you could see white over spray in the wiper area.  I believe the Z28 was built at Van Nuys as it came from Harry Mann Chevrolet in Los Angeles, but we never took notice of the trim tag. - Mark

General Discussion / Re: rev limiters

I didn't think that a 1969 Z28 single point distributor with stock components would rev much higher than 6500 rpm.  I had asked earlier about how high would a stock 1968 Z28 distributor rev as I believe it was transistorized and knew that my friend would shift his 1968 Z28 over 7000 rpm and thought it still had its original distributor.

There was a previous posting on CRG in 2020 about a Camaro that was sold on Hemmings that was built in Venezuela and the seller posted some documentation that may interest you:

I agree with cook_dw that I would go with painted headers as you can just touch them up after installation.  As for Hooker Super Competition headers, they are designed to maximize performance and you can have problems with ground clearance and the length of the collectors can make them difficult to install.

I've owned a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am that was built at the Van Nuys Plant since 1986 and have all the original documents for the vehicle, which include the window sticker, dealer invoice, warranties and maintenance invoices, and can say that although the VIN number is stamped on the Borg Warner Super T-10 transmission, the block was never stamped.  For the 1979 model year, Pontiac shipped completed 400 cu inch engines to Van Nuys in 1978 and the engines were stored in an area next to the Cushion Room by the train tracks.  You could identify the Pontiac 400 engines as they had chrome valve covers.  The 400 engines for 1979 had an engine identification code of "PWH" instead of code "WC" that was used in 1978 for the Firebirds with 4-speed transmissions.  Although I believe that the engine in my Trans Am is the original motor and has never been rebuilt, even though I was an employee at the plant when the car was built, I can't say what happened with my car as I wasn't the operator stamping the VIN numbers.

I also own a 1970 BOSS 302 Mustang and the last VIN number stamped on the transmission should be a "7," but shows a "2."  The VIN numbers were stamped individually on the block and transmission in 1970 at the Dearborn Plant and I would find it difficult to believe that the transmission isn't the original, but I would only be speculating.

I will say that we didn't have air conditioning on the assembly line at Van Nuys when I worked there and during the summer, it got so hot, especially on the second floor where we used water-based paint.  Not an easy place to work, but in general, everyone did the best we could as few wanted to be transferred to another location if the plant was closed.
