Original Cars and Details / Re: Z28 cowl paint (and Z11/Z10)
« on: April 01, 2016, 11:02:36 PM »
Has it been established when and where the cowl was painted with the stripe color?
Was it done by Fisher, when the body was painted, or by Chevrolet when the front end was painted?

Would it be easier to drill out the 3/8" hole, and re-tap it to 1/2" NPT?

Originality / Re: Speedometer Gear Reduction Units

Both 67 and 68 speedo charts list part #3860348 (orange) as the driven gear for Z28 w/4.10.
67 drive gear is #3708145 (steel)
68 drive gear is #3924097 (yellow)

I don't have a chart for 69, but can't think of any reason why they would change it.

Adapters only on Z28 w/4.56 or 4.88

Both the 67 (4spd., 14" tire. 4:10) and the 68 Z28 (4spd., 15" tire, 4:56) would have used the same adapter. Part #6476735 with a gear ratio of .8235.

If the car originally had 14" tires, it would use an adapter, with 4:10 gears.

Have you checked that the heat riser valve is working? If the car has been sitting for a few years, the valve could have rusted shut, and not be opening when it's supposed to. Probably wouldn't cause idle troubles, but could affect higher rpm performance.

What kind of compression readings are you getting on this engine?

Considering the painting process for the 302 (the intake and rocker covers were masked with plastic shields), my guess is that the retainers would remain black with maybe some orange over spray on the very outside edges and underneath.

I think what may be confusing you is this: The Camaro valve is mounted on the outside of the frame rail. The Chevelle valve is on the inside of the frame rail, thus making the inlet and outlet lines appear reversed.

Splash shield for the clutch linkage. I'm not sure that they were also put on cars with automatic trans.

The block casting number is on the block bellhousing flange, (drivers side). Top of the block, towards the firewall.

The casting date is also on the bellhousing flange, on the passenger side.

If it is too difficult to see them, use play dough, or plumbers putty to press an impression, and read it that way.
