Original Cars and Details / Re: Original 1967 Z28 - Mountain Green

Of all the 67 Z’s I’ve been able to find information on this is the one I’d like to know more about. I do appreciate glamor but am very interested in the original details of these cars.
Looking forward to “More to follow!”. (Are you taking requests?)

Wow - Speaking of seeing things, I thought the 4 X 4 Mustangs only resided in the South

Apparently one escaped! That was my first ever sighting and it did rev up my anticipation for the swap meet. We were visiting SoCal in December and happened to be in the Pomona area when the swap meet was on so I didn’t want to miss the opportunity. Spent the whole day there, watched most of the cars leave the show and did come out of there with 67 Camaro parts!

Gates open at 5 am. Photo of the mustang was taken on the way in just after 5 and yes it’s all over by 2pm.
I was told that there isn’t much old car stuff any more and I can confirm that’s true. Lots of new and non auto relate items but still a great day out. The car show runs concurrently with the swap meet and it was really good. Plenty of tail gating, music and guys and girls enjoying the day with their friends and their rides.
A few car show pics are attached.

Thanks Bryon.
I’m surprised to learn that 660 cases were in use prior to the 68MY.
Since this transmission has an assembly code, predates the warranty program (CT, CC stamps) and has no partial vin I suspect it was a warranty transmission or case.

I google searched the assembly code and a picclick.com sold listing came up. The seller listed a M21 660 with an assembly code of P7K07 and no Vin.
At first I though okay here's some data to support my transmission stamp as being authentic and then it occurred to me that the transmission in the ad might be the one in my car.
Entirely possible if the transmission listing predated my cars CHP inspection report of Feb 2019.

Here's Jerry"s description of the transmission:
Transmission: P7k07 assm date, 1968 replacement #3925660 case casting, Muncie M21 4-speed, not original to this vehicle

I checked again for a vin on the case this time with the use of dum-dum. I found that I could reach from the passenger side up and over the top of the transmission and was able to press dum-dum on to the top of the case. You can see in the photo, the dum-dum test of the assembly date transferred well but I wasn't able to find a partial vin. I'm pretty confident that this transmission like the one in the picclick listing, doesn't have a partial vin stamp.

Does a Muncie 4-speed without a vin indicate that the transmission was not assembly line installed?

Thanks guys for your reply's to date.

Here are better assembly code photos, I hope.
I didn't find a vin or any other stamping on the case although its possible there
could be something on top that wasn't accessible using a mirror.

Here's another date code photo.

I'm not sure what to make of this transmission's assembly date code. Decoding it is straight forward enough but, as I understand it, the 660 case was introduced for the '68 MY. Is it possible that this transmission was assembled July 7th for a '67 MY car as indicated, perhaps as a warrantee replacement, or is more likely that either the assembly date code is an error or re-stamp?

I'm wondering if there are any other examples similar to this or if anyone has opinions on the authenticity of the assembly date code.

Thanks for any input your able to provide.

I was looking through service bulletins for something else when I came across this one. Good explanation of the usage of p/n 3921060 G.R. 7.545 Cushion Unit.

Another example of a 3892657 block with a square-head 1/8" NPT plug, assembly date stamp including a "V" and a sequential number in the 50000-79999 range.

Decoding/Numbers / CE Block, Flint or Tonawanda?
« on: November 07, 2021, 08:21:37 PM »
I have a CE block that I'm considering using for a '67 302 build and have realized that the sequence number falls into the Tonawanda assigned range base on the Chevrolet Dealer Service Information Bulletin, 69-I-1,dated 19 Sept,1968. Other indicators point toward this block being cast and assembled at Flint such as a square-head 1/8" NPT plug and assembly date stamp including a "V".

Here is the block information:
Casing number: 3892657
Casting date: J127
Pad stamp: CE8 54915
Assembly date: 10 7 V

This block was cast and stamped well before this Service Bulletin was issued, provided that the CE stamp is legit.
I would like to know if there are any other similar examples out there and if this block indicates that there was a different assignment of sequence numbers used prior to 19 Sept,1968.

Thanks
Terry

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 1968 LOS 04D L30M20 POP Error?
« on: May 30, 2021, 11:48:30 PM »
Thanks Ed.
I'd imagine the error rate was much less than 1% but given he volume of POP's being produced there must have been a few mistakes a day being made at any given plant.
