We pulled the engine/transmition to do the cleaning/etc. In the process nobody noticed if the bell housing was painted or not. My question is: was the bell housing painted originally and if so was it the same colour as the engine?

The bellhousing was on the engine when it was painted, and normally shows at least overspray on the forward 3"-4", although coverage varied greatly.
