I just had my steering box rebuilt on my 69 Z and it is leaking grease from under the top lid. It appears that the guy who rebuilt it used form a gasket instead of using the real gasket. I looked online and NAPA did not list one of these gaskets. NPD had one but for $43!! I dont want to pay that kind of money for a gasket. Anybody have any ideas on where to look? Any other places this box could be leaking from the topside?

Thanks

I'll tell you what I was taught from a old mechanic a long time ago.  Get a gasket maker set or sheet of gasket material if they still sell them.  Lay the material on top of the opening in the box and use a small hammer to pound at the sharp edges on the outside and it will cut a gasket.  Do the same for the inside.  If you have a ball peen hammer, you can use the ball to hit the screw holes to cut them out.  Or just cut one out from a trace.

Is this a manual or power steering gear?

It is easy to make your own gasket.  I got a small roll of paper gasket material (light brown in color). from O'Reilly Auto Parts but bet others have it.   You can cut it with HD finger nail sissors to allow cutting the curves.  Then sharpen a small piece of metal tubing to punch the holes. You can trace the pattern from the top casting and the bottom casting on HD paper, cut and transfer to gasket material, mark and cut.

Hope this helps
