Can I get some thoughts on this engine assembly date code stamp. Does this look authentic or appear to be a restamp ? The number 1's are different than most I have seen on other stampings. There is also no partial VIN stamping on this pad. Was the partial VIN always stamped next to the date code stamp or were there some exceptions ? Tonawanda built 396 engine.

Check the oil filter boss, you may be able to find the vin there.

Thanks for your reply MO. I appreciate that. I have located the partial VIN there but it is faint and I can only make out the last 3 numbers. Was hoping to get some input on the authenticity (or lack thereof).

rub some chalk on it and lightly brush off the excess.. might reveal it with some obtuse lighting

Thanks for the suggestion. Will give that a try.

I'm no expert on the authenticity of stamps, but it was common for GM to use the number 1 in place of an I for assembly stamps.
