1969 z Engine painting

Getting ready to paint a 69z engine . The exhaust manifolds were installed before orange paint ?Seen original photos of 1969 small blocks when new and the manifolds were painted. thoughts ? thanks

*In General Terms: I think it was plant (Flint -vs- Tonawanda) & year (1959 -vs- 1969) of mfr. dependent.

So I have seen a vintage photo  69 Nova w/ fully painted manifolds.,,,,but the real question is How that sampling really relates to Your Restoration.

It doesn't matter much whether they are painted or not, since if you use the same paint it'll be burned off the exhaust manifolds within an hour or two or running the engine and driving the car.   So unless you aren't going to drive it...   it doesn't matter...

The nova engine you have seen was built at Tonawanda... SB's built at Flint did not have the manifolds installed prior to paint.

The Intake, the valve covers, the drivers side rear spark plug heat shield stand, and bell housing were installed prior to painting... The intake and valve covers were covered with a crude plastic mask, the water pump had a paper tube over the snout and the stamp pad was masked, the distributor had a "coffee" can over it... most of the time the under lip of the  oil pan had little paint. ++ The water pump hose inlet should be masked ++

I think I read somewhere the fuel pump plate was not on during the painting process and should be Black. Mine was Black during Legends judging.
