does it usually stay where it rises to during driving after shut off, until it cools off and restart goes to cold and cranks up? i removed the old resistor patch that was on old gauge mounting position, any ideas, thanks

Correct the Gauge-Meter is does not use ANY pivot springs to return it to nominal.
Think Like a Full tank of Fuel and Gauge indicates that at time of turning off the vehicle then siphoning off the tank, when you re-energize the circuit the resistance presented to the circuit is different and the gauge will be driven by the new sensed value.

I am NOT sure about the use of "not using" the SHUNT resistor, Do the OER instructions tell you to Omit it?

thanks and yes it said to remove the old resistor strip becasue new gauge has a built in resistor.

As a side note the console "AMP" external shunt gauge Does use Balancing Springs and "should" return to straight up or close to it or 0 amps  charge/discharge. when not energized.

Good to know the repops have an internal resistor.
