I have what I THINK are my original assembly line correct 4 disc brake pads. Do these look original and wear for about 55,000 original miles? Saturated with dried brake fluid. Is there a solution I can use to clean them for usage, or even temporary usage? I have many chemicals, but don't wanna eat away the pads. Can I soak/submerge them in Lacquer Thinner/Brakleen/Acid Tone/Aqua Ammonia/Witch Hazel/1-1-1 Trichloroethane.. etc. etc. Danny

Danny, you want to enjoy the car and drive it so my 100% recommendation is to install new brake pads and even check run-out on the rotors. Even not knowing where the pads came off (position relative to rotor) leaves some compromise. When truing rotors we always installed new pads. I would not have a clue to what to soak them in and just would not ever take a chance (too much to lose). Survivor is one thing, safety is another friend, so have them brakes working to their maximum.

I have to echo Chick's response...  Even if your possibly original brake pads were 5X better than they appear to be, I'd not recommend *soaking* them in anything!   Replace them...  the brake material appears to be almost totally worn thru anyway... ignoring their poor condition.

Throw them away!! They're JUNK!

Lol  One man's junk....

Personally; would I use them?  Heck no.

Would I clean them up and put them on a shelf on display?  Heck yes..

But Im weird.

I have had the new pads installed for a year and a half now, and car stops fine!. I was just seeing if there was a way to preserve them.
JohnZ.. Do you think they are original ? I believe the back shoes that are still on the car are original. So since they wear out faster should I assume? Remember car sat for 26 years..
Darrell..funny you mention display, I am the display king..  ;D  .. D

Soak them in Evapo and see if there are any markings or stampings..

Not sure if this is correct, but I thought I read somewhere that the factory disc pads were not riveted and only bonded to the steel backing plate.

Funny how I always seem to have bizarre sh#* on my cars. The bulkhead thing that nobody can answer ... if I should have an " R " dist. cap ... What the numbers and letters are on plastic mirror gasket, and should it be embossed with the word Camaro.. and several other things.
Anyway, I cleaned them up about 2 hours ago just to get a better look, and low and behold all 4 have a splash of white in the same spot about an inch long X 3/8ths of an inch. Also there is a red stripe on all 4. I will post pictures later if anybody cares...  As far as glue or rivets, I have not learned that info.. D

Here are the white inspection marks and the reddish/burgundy line on all of the pads... Danny

I'm not sure I trust my memory anymore, but I've always thought the factory pads were rivets, and the rebuilts ones were bonded..?   I'm pretty sure the factory pads were/are riveted (and bonded probably)...

Defintely riveted. Bonded pads came later to the party -

Shoes used to be riveted, also -
