thank you!!
I was told that John Greenwood bought all the 4 lug wheels from Penske, had them "fixed", but because they weren`t drilled perfectly Greenwood came up with this retainer that bolted to the hub so he could use 5/8" bolts with the noses cut down as lug studs, anyone know why Greenwood did the hub retainer and 5/8 bolts ?

I was not aware that Greenwood bought those and then did the modifications that you describe. Isn't he still around to ask the question to?

Here's another shot of the 4-lug Minilites.

What was the reason for doing this?

What was the reason for doing this?

With regard to the 4 lug vs. 5 lug?

I believe I recall Jon or another knowledgeable member mentioning that Penske wanted to cut down on pit times, so they "removed" one of five lugs to speed up the swapping of tires.
(I'm sure[assume] there is a rule that ensures teams to place nuts on ALL studs; Penske's solution was to simply decrease the number of studs)

Thanks for the explanation. That actually makes a lot of sense, and is a typical Penske approach to extract the most from the rules as they're written.

....and so the 1971 rules stated " all hubs require five (5) studs equally spaced around the circumference of the hub."    ::)   Ken
