I have seen several 302 decals for sale online. Some have a different size border etc. etc. Does anybody know of one that passes judging, and is the one that most use for accuracy?... Danny

Come on guys, doesn't anybody know the most accurate repro? I have seen 3 or 4 now, and just don't know which one to order. Some of you have HAD to order some of these over the years.. D

I can't say whether their 302 label is more original than others, but I find the Firestones (John and Maya) at Bowtie Muscle Car are great people to deal with and John does know Z28s... :)

In case you are missing your original one, here's a photo of my frayed original one (from my 69 Z28)... for comparison.

Seller states:  "This is a correct reproduction of the 302 Crossram Air Cleaner Decal used by Chevy"  and this seems to be a 'classic headquarters' part, which generally are the most accurate of the reproduction vendors.

My Question:  Did GM actually sell/provide such a '465 hp' decal for the over the counter cross ram system?   This is a surprise to me if so, and doesn't make much sense since they never installed the system on any engine from the factory...

I would not think they did because it took more than just the crossram to do it.

Danny I bought the decal from Bowtie that Gary linked to above. I was told it is the closest to the original by a friend who has owned many original cars. I also recall a thread on this subject where (IIRC) it was stated that none of the repro decals are as durable as the originals, and the foil peels after a few years. So I bought several, although I have yet to fit one.

Well I see many issues with this bowtie sticker. I don't know why they can't be made near perfect. I can probably make one on my own. Here is what "I" see. Doesn't matter how nice the owners are, if they can't see. Actually the 465HP sticker is CLOSER to the original, too bad. At least the lines are not TOUCHING on the "E" in fire. Why can't the other sticker be like that?
#1 The back of the 3 is not grooved deep enough
#2 The interior of the 3 is too short
#3 The top bottom and middle of the 2 is thinner
#4 The top of the T on turbo is too thin
#5 The center line on E of fire is terrible, not even close, WAY to thick. So much so that it is touching the top line. Looks like dog squeeze! Virtually no separation. How could they not see that bleeding into the other line?
#6 The list goes on for about 5 or 6 more things.
The search continues... Danny

Danny,

I agree that (from the photographs), the printing of the custom 465 hp decal is better than the 302/290 decal....  emphasizing (FROM the photographs)...
the photograph in the ad may (or may not) be representative of the actual decal.  Call Bowtie and ask them those questions....

I'll hunt down the decals I bought from Bowtie and post a picture, my recollection was that they are better than the photo indicates.

If they are not smart enough to post the picture of the actual item they are selling, well.. I sure am not going to be giving them any of my money. I'm dumb, but I isn't stupid.. D

You may be referring to what Gary posted, but if not, I didn't say the photo is not of the item, just that the decal looks better in front of you than the photo suggests.

I do not think either are 100% correct.  Bowtie Muscle got the font correct for the "302" and "Turbo Fire" but missed out on the size and on the "290 Horsepower" The other is not correct at all to me.

Side question.

Did the originals have "printed in the usa" on them?  I cant remember ever seeing it on one.  I guess because everything back then was made in the USA.

Tim, Yes I get it. I WAS talking about what Gary said. I just can't figure out why it's not nearly perfect. It should be really hard to tell. And again, if you are selling an item online for the whole world to see, you take the time to take multiple pictures at different angles. I would be really curious to see one in my hand, or pictures of some others that you have if even that "E" is correct. That's not going to sell me, but it's a start... D
