I tried to raise an old thread from the dead ( :o ) but its not showing up as an active topic.

Has the fuel pump stampings been decoded?

Steve Shauger

Yes, for example JI40727 decodes to Oct of 69  J=10 I =9 and the application is L78. The second letter is the year G= 67 H=68 . Can post more examples if needed. in 71 the coding changed to include day instead of month. Let me know if you need more info...

OK,,, I've pretty much figured out that this is not the original on my '67  327 engine.  I have this  280N40503  AC Delco pump.  I've seen a couple places that offer this 40503 pump as a repop. pump for the 40727 and 40470.  How does that date code read out?

I'm going to say 280th day of 1974. I noted previously in 71ish they started using the day instead of the month. Now could it be 1985? There are other things to look for to determine age, such as size of the AC and the weep hole configuration.

I have been watching  for one for my z. Hbc had rebuilt ones back ordered but they didn't seem to get any. Anyone have a pile of them and I thought Arthur Gould could rebuild them?

The last one I had rebuilt was done by Goat Hill for my 69 L34, it was a 40568. I had that done five years ago...

The 140 cam was put in mine about 71 and they must have changed the fuel pump. Mine is now a 234k42080. The crank was balanced and bearings were dated fall 71

Yes Steve, it could be 1985, and that probably would make more since as that is about the time the car was rescued out of an Apple orchard.  And the coloring/plating is not all that bad.
