Can anyone tell me if there is a correct torque setting for the tighting down of valve covers for a 350V8?

Thanks  dab67

It's 45-50 INCH-pounds; don't over-tighten - it'll distort the cover and cause a leak.

45-50 in-lb is essentially 4 ft-lb; reasonably snug and as previously stated, don't overtighten.

If you are going to use a 1/4" drive torque wrench, I'd suggest "testing" on a similar bolt off of the engine so you can get the feel of the torque wrench.  I've seen some 1/4" drive torque wrenches where it is pretty difficult to "feel" the indent or click when the torque setting is reached.  Tendency is to keep pulling.

If you don't use a torque wrench, I would suggest tightening with a 1/4" ratchet  by turning the ratchet head with your finger tips and not the handle - snug 'em up and you'll be in the ballpark

Thanks John and Rich, I will tighten them using a 1/4 ratchet using my fingers. I'll let ya know the outcome.

John and Rich:

I tighten the new covers down as specified. I ran the car for about 30 minutes to get everything nice and hot and then checked for any leaks. Did not find any.

Thanks again!
