Speedo Doing The 2 Step

When I get up to about 160mph, my speedo starts to dance back and forth about a 1/4" or so...okay, around 70. Can someone tell me how to fix this problem?

Nice dream did one of your bias ply tires blow out in the same dream. The last time I went 120mph I don't think a quarter inch was noticeable if I even had time to look at the speedometer

Take the cable loose from the speedometer end and spray White Lithium grease in the cable housing.

Marty I agree with the two above post, same thing happened to one of my past cars and the white lithium spray grease did the trick.

You need to remove the flex shaft from the cable, clean off the crud and blow the shaft housing out. Lubricate, then reassemble. Cable lube is graphite based. Although it may work, white lithium is not really the best thing to use.

Scott - I don't have any experience with this. Is there a reference to the speedo assembly in the AIM? Or do you have any pics? You know me, I'm a paint by the numbers guy.

...And, can graphite based cable lube be purchased from most jobbers?

Hi Marty,

12, C3 in the 69 AIM gives an illustration.  Also, look in your Service Manual (I don't own a 69 service manual, sorry....).

Some parts stores still stock a .5 oz. tube of graphite cable lube.  If not in your area, it is available on line.
Lithium is grease based. Thus, it can get cruddy over time. Graphite is usually based in an oil suspension.  I'd go with Sauron327's suggestion.

Corvette Central sells a graphite-based product called "Kable-Ease" that's made specifically for lubricating speedo and tach cables; I've used it for years on my Corvettes.
