Engine pad....painted or not

Does anyone know if the engine pad was painted at the factory? I have heard that they were not painted. Is that correct? I assume they weren't so that they could be read easier since they wouldn't be filled up with paint.

Engine stamp pads weren't painted - they had a piece of masking tape on them when they went through the paint booth.
