water pump installation

Was the water pump installed on the block prior to the engine assembly date? or would it have been after?
Also What is the difference between the 692 and the 170 pumps? I keep reading that the 170 was installed on Tonawanda blocks and the 692 everywhere else, is this correct?
hypothetically - could my 06A tonawanda motor have a 692 pump? I am trying to find a replacement that would be date/ cast correct for my engine.
Thanks for your input

Engines were shipped to the assembly plants with the Waterpumps installed.

No, that's the shipping dock at Flint V-8 in 1955.
