When the cars were painted at the factory- were the metallic paints like Silver or Gold clear coated as part of the process? I am not under the impression that this was done, but have a friend who believes it was- no problem just want to pin down the actual process for metallics in 1969.

Thanks!

Pretty sure it was all single stage lacquer.

There were no clearcoats on 1st-generation Camaros, regardless of color; just straight acrylic lacquer.

Your friend may be confused with the thick coat of clear lacquer that some customizers used on paint jobs back in the 50s and 60s --not the factory.  That was nothing like the clear coat of today.  As for the factory acrylic lacquer, that's why I would spend all morning waxing the car before a Saturday night date.  Had to make it shine!   ;D  ;D  ;D

I guess that's the difference when you own a Z/28, I'd spend all morning adjusting the valves, carb, dwell, timing, etc. before a Saturday night date.  Of course, my dates were with Mustangs, Cudas, etc. at the local drag strip!    ;D    ;D    ;D
