I recently purchased a 68 convertible with a 3 speed automatic tilt column shift. I'm trying to find out if this is original to the car. Trim tag numbers are:

12B

ST68   12467   NOR   54547

TR712     T1

The vin is 124678N35XXXX

The car has a bench seat so I know from the 712 that that is not original. I was told late production 68's got 3 speed autos and I think this would be an early production, could it have came from factory with this 3 speed auto column? It has a mono leaf rearend under it don't if it is original. It has power windows, power top, AC, power disc brakes. Any help would be great.
Thanks Scott

It is early: 2nd week of December, 1967.
Sounds like a 69 transmission... check the date code on your transmission.

I bought the car without motor or tranny. I was wondering if the 3 speed automatic column could be correct for this car?
Thanks

No, assuming it was an automatic originally, it had a powerglide.

If you find the axle code, that will tell us a little more.

Thanks Kurt. I don't have a P.O.P. or a build sheet so with numbers I have availailable to me (trim tag) I quess I might as well make it a 4 speed car.

What Kurt means is to get the "numbers" off the rear axle in the car.  Once you have these numbers, someone here can tell you if the rear axle is original (or could be) and possibly what transmission came in the car.  To find these numbers read this link:

Good luck.   :)
