I just purchased a 1969 Camaro and would like to find any info I could on this car. It is another classic example of the old car out in the barn.      VIN # 124379N586721      The Cowl tag reads   ST 69   12437  NOR  242938   ,   TR  711  ,  59    ,   O1C  ,  X44  . I have an untouched 1969 427 engine, and Turbo 400, & thought about a copo clone if it has no importance originally.  Thaks for the help  Mike Carnes   email   mcarne01@bellsouth.net

What's the paint code from the cowl tag? (Whoops!  I need to get my bifocals changed... Thanks John, Sorry, Mike!)

Otherwise, it decodes like this:
69-12437 = 69 Coupe.
01C = Built the Third week of January; NOR = in Norwood Ohio.
711 = Standard Black Bucket Seats.
X44 = non-SS, non-Z28, without style trim

...not sure I would encourage you to clone...  :-\

Take a look here: http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#XnnCodes
and here: http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#CowlTag

The VIN on your car is interesting to me in that my car is also an 01C Norwood built Camaro, but my VIN # is almost exactly 5000 units ahead of yours.

Interesting in that both of our cars are 01C Norwood cars and in Jan 1969 Norwood built a total of 19,733 (which would be pretty close to 5000 units/week) - our cars must have went through finall assembly about one week apart.

My 01C X-77 was 174 units before your car. Same shift I'd say.

Sent last reply without finishing. If our cars are only 174 units apart ( vin # ), would the body numbers be as far off as 12310? My car was 174 Vin #'s before and cowl tag has "NOR230628"

In 1969, the "body number" was assigned when the dealer order was accepted for production, not when the body was actually built; there can be a significant spread between body numbers for cars with VIN numbers that are very close together.

We are in Americus Ga., and got hit by the Tornado's, So no intenet until now.Don't worry the car is fine ! Thanks for all of your input, I will probably build a 427 COPO Clone. But I just found a real good ( same era ) 4 speed set up I will go with instead of the Turbo 400.I have already started the restore, and will post pictures soon. ???
