and thought I would wash wax finish up any tuneup issues that were left from the previous weekend.  So Im almost finished and I keep hearing a little chatter under the valve cover.  I pull the cover to adjust the valves and get to #7 intake and see what looks like a weak spring.  I pull off the keepers to discover this.

Luckily it didnt drop a valve because I would have been sick..  But got it replaced with a spare I had and everything is back to normal.  Not sure I like the wheels on the car..  Cragars are definitely the leading candidate at this point.

Also a pic of the tailpan after waxing.  I have to retract my first belief of them being semi or satin black.

"I have to retract my first belief of them being semi or satin black. "
What do you mean by that statement?

He's talking about the black paint on the tail pan.
" He who knows naught, knows not that he knows naught"  It's not you...  It's just the way my brain is wired.

I figured that but I'm not sure what he is stating. Does he mean the tail blackout is gloss black?

Darrell,

That broken spring would bother me, esp if you have a high lift cam installed...  Are you close to 'spring bind'??
PS.  The car looks great.  I like the gray spokes...  :)

I know the topic of the tail paint has been discussed here before and I believe the consensus was the black paint used for the tail was the same for the lower rockers (where used) and the firewall. It makes sense because I doubt GM would have a special gloss just for the tail blackout. If you were to take a guess (unless you know for sure) at what gloss level would you say yours is?

No it's not close to coil bind.  This engine still has the original L78 cam & springs.

I can't say with 100% but I would guess 70-80% gloss.  You have to realize that in my case the tail panel hasn't any type of protectant applied in over 20 years.  Just a wash every now & then.

The gloss/satin BB rear body panel debate was thoroughly vetted elsewhere a few years back. Gloss and satin OE paint survivors exist so it looks like both is the answer.

Gloss black was used for Z/28 striping. Not a stretch to envision it being used on rear body panels.

Good call on taking it off and finding the broken spring. Do you think there maybe more than one?

Also I like that pic with your car in the shade, that tree is priceless when its hot out I bet... 8)

It would be best to replace all the springs as a matched set. The others wont be far behind the broken spring.
