Hey guys,

I got in touch with a guy who does cadium and zinc plating and I want to send him some items to refinish.  Is there a source somewhere (book or website) that tells what parts were plated what colors?  Especially under the hood?

Here are a few items that I am unsure of the correct plating color.

Relay mounted on passenger side firewall for ZL2 hood solenoid.
Smaller relay mounted on driver side behind brake booster for convertible relay.
Relay mounted under external regulator on driver side radiator support.
Base of external regulator.
Alternator fan and nut (zinc, cadium or black)?
Any other parts that need a zinc or cadium plating that I have not listed.

Thanks guys,

Steve

Get a copy of Jerry Macneish's book and the appendix has the correct coatings for each part listed.

Although many parts are described in various sources as having been "cadmium" plated, very few actually were. Most items that were plated to appear silvery were actually zinc plated; most of those drawings gave the supplier the option of either zinc or cadmium plating, and zinc was significantly less expensive - guess which process was used in the days when pennies of piece cost determined who got the business? Cadmium plating virtually disappeared in the 70's when it was classified as a primary carcinogen, and about the only place where it's found today is in critical corrosion-sensitive aircraft applications.
