i have replaced my original gas tank with a new tank due to age, appearance, and mostly it had small pin holes in it. it has been recommended to me to clear coat the tank before installing it, I'm not to sure about doing this, has anyone ever tried this and if so did it last or peel off? thanks for any advice that any you can offer.

If your tank is Ni-Terne treated just leave it be. What manufacturer and what does the spec sheet state?

I think the issue is that the edges & resistance welds will eventually start to rust even on a tank made from ni-terne.  Obviously, the rust should not present anything other than a cosmetic issue due to the sacrificial coating.  I know there are companies that will re-tin a tank, but I'm not sure it will have the look of ni-terne.
My car had dealer-applied undercoating, so I just primered the tank with a galvanized metal primer and painted it satin black to duplicate the 'as-delivered' look.  I installed the tank (GM) back in the mid 80's and it still looks like the day I installed it.

the tank came from heartbeat city, don't recall any spec sheet on the tank.

Some of the corvette restorers are having tanks powder coated clear. They say they will stay nice forever. Seemed like an interesting option to look at ;D

That will also result in a 20% "finish" deduction in Corvette NCRS Flight judging, as there was no paint or powder coating on original terne-plated tanks.

Ask the tank manufacturer, not the retailer; retailers generally don't have that kind of detail. Quanta tanks are made of Ni-Terne steel - don't know about the others.

According to the Spectra Premium web site, their standard tanks are made of ni-terne as well.
